Swathi,
The current version of Oracle is 10g. So, 9i is one back and 8i is two back. If you have a choice, I would go with 9i since it is more recent.

For career wise, of course, you should work with latest stuffs. In this case, I recommended 9i.
In money and certification wise, I recommend 8i first, and then upgrade to 9i as well as 10g. It is becos, Oracle announced that, if you took exams after Aug 30, 2002, you *MUST* take an Oracle Certified Training course. Otherwise, even you pass all 4 papers, you will NOT receive the certificate, and you are NOT regonzied by Oracle that you are Oracle9i DBA.
Details can be found:

So, do you mean if we take starts from 8i, we don't have to take that instructor's base class from Oracle University??

YES. The course requirement applies to Oracle9i DBA track ONLY.
