I was using our data layer and found that even if I'm using a clob, it wouldn't accept string with over 4000 characters. Is this true? Do I need to use 'bind variables' in order to have anything over 4000 chars?

Don't know much about this, but please check what sorts of CLOB there are. Some DBMSs have different sizes of CLOB.

Dan,
A CLOB can hold way more than 4000 characters. You do need bind variables though. The command line tool can't take really long strings.
