I've installed Tomcat4.1 with jdk1.3 on my machine. When I start the tomcat, it opens one extra command window with Title Java and gets closed immediately.
I've set path, JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME too. It is not showing me any error but still it is not starting the tomcat.
Can anyone help me in this???

One way to see what error that window shows and then closes is to change the last line in startup.bat

This will run catalina.bat in the same window so you can see what the problem is.
If it is not immediately obvious, REM out the @echo off line at the start of catalina.bat

thanx..i'll definately try this. But before that could you pls tell, is this because i am using jdk1.3 with tomcat 4.1?? Because when i run startup, that time i opens one command window with title Java instead of startup and immediately closes down.

Hi Bill,
Nope!!
the code runs the startup.bat at cmd line .
But the window where error runs still closes.
Cannot see the error.
Any more clues??

Are you executing startup.bat from a command prompt window?
Just clicking on the bat file will not leave you an open window to examine.

Yes I am,As my script is being echoed on the cmd prompt.
Also earlier my tomcat was running and fine.
I also checked for all known errors like classpath,no xml.jar files in classpath , port conflict.
Any more ideas??
regards
Majid.

Lets see if I have this straight.
1. You are opening a command prompt window, changing to the TOMCAT_HOME/bin directory and executing startup.bat
2. Your startup.bat has been modified to use

3. The catalina.bat continues executing in the same command prompt window.
4. Something goes wrong and the window closes
If that is exactly what happens then I have not got the faintest idea whats wrong - that command prompt window should stay open no matter what error occurs.
Some problems that people have had with 4.1 include accidently using the version that requires JDK 1.4, but the download for that version is clearly labeled.
Which Tomcat version was running fine on this system?
If the window was staying open I would suggest REMing out the @echo off line at the start of catalina.bat so you could see all of the responses.

Majid,
I had a similar situation when I installed 4.1.12. We tried trouble shooting it with no results. I upgraded to 4.1.18 and the issue went away.
I know it's not a solution but if you have to get up an running that would be my choice.
P.S. 4.1.24 runs real nice.
Hope it helps,
Tim

Thank you to all of you. But my Tomcat is working now. I installed jdk1.4 instead jdk1.3 and its running fine.
But there is one funny thing with it. Normally when we start tomcat, it start in cmd window named startup or tomcat but in my machine it is showing window named java.
Still its working fine.
Thanx once again.
