IntelliJ can find classes outside of my current project just fine after I put them in the project's classpath. yet when I run the servlet in Tomcat, Tomcat purports to know nothing about these classes even though my system classpath points to them and it has worked in the past. Any hints to what I might be missing? Thanks!

This isn't really an IDEA question, it's a Tomcat question. I believe Tomcat won't use your system CLASSPATH to load classes; you've got to explicitly install the classes and JAR files into Tomcat's lib directory or into individual webapp directories.

I believe Ernest is right. I'll transfer this to the Tomcat forum where you might get some verification.
