I just downloaded tomcat 5.0.18, when I run jsp I get error saying that compiler not found. I then modified catalina.bat file and added
SET JAVA_HOME=C:\j2sdk1.4.2
I still got the same error.
But in Tomcat console messages I can see that JAVA_HOME = C:\j2sdk1.4.2.
Whats wrong?
Thanks.

Error from browser:
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP
No Java compiler was found to compile the generated source for the JSP.
This can usually be solved by copying manually $JAVA_HOME/lib/tools.jar from the JDK
to the common/lib directory of the Tomcat server, followed by a Tomcat restart.
If using an alternate Java compiler, please check its installation and access path.
Tomcat console messages:
C:\tomcat5.0.18\bin>startup
Using CATALINA_BASE: ..
Using CATALINA_HOME: ..
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: ..\temp
Using JAVA_HOME: C:\j2sdk1.4.2
C:\tomcat5.0.18\bin>

I think you will get a better response in the Tomcat/Apache forum, so I am going to move this thread.
This is the Servlet forum, which answers questions directly related to Servlets, you question is more appropriate towards Tomcat.
Hope that helps you get a quicker answer.

simply find tools.jar file in your <java_home>/lib/ folder and copy it into <tomcat-install-dir>/common/lib/ folder. Restart tomcat. it'll work.

Do the next thing next. That’s a pretty good rule. Read the tiny ad, that’s a pretty good rule, too.
