Hello all,

I have worked with Apache server at previous company. Now I want to install and deploy Apache/Tomcat in my home pc. Can anyone please give me some guidelines on where to start, how to download and check if its working ok?. I am really lost on where to look.

Thanks for your time

Hi Sashi,

You can download Tomcat 5.0.28 here. As for me, I downloaded the 5.0.28.zip version. Tomcat 5.0.28 is based on Servlet 2.4 and JSP 2.0. Unzip the file. Read the RUNNING.txt under your Tomcat directory for instructions on how to setup and test the Tomcat.

For more info on Tomcat, you might want to take a look at CoreServlets: A Tutorial on Installing and Using Tomcat 4 or 5 for Servlet and JSP Development.

Just unzip Tomcat into your root directory (or wherever). No other install is necessary. To check if it works, double click 'startup.bat' in the 'bin' directory and, when it has started, point your browser at http://localhost:8080/ and you should see the welcome page. 8080 is the default port Tomcat listens at.

Your web applications go int the webapps folder. But you need to follow fairly strict rules regarding the structure and content of a web application.
