I am new to J2EE. I have learnt Java and as a next step I am going to learn JSP & Servlets. So I had bought the book Head First JSP & Servlet by Kathy & Bates.

To run the example coding, I want to install the Tomcat 5. I have alraedy installed JDK 1.3 and set the path for that while I have learnt the JAVA.

I have downloaded the binary 5.5.9(.exe) files from the Apache tomcat site. Whether 5.5.9 Deployer.zip, 5.5.9 Admin.zip,5.5.9 Embed.zip,5.5.9.zip and 5.5.9 compat.zip will be needed. Though I have downloaded that too.

My question is whether Tomcat 5.5.9 will run with JDK1.3 or we have to use JDK higher version such as JDK1.4.

After clicking the exe file of the Tomcat 5.5.9, what are the steps we have to follow, that is what are the classpath should be set. Please tell me what the paths should be placed at the autoexec.bat file.

Somebody have told set the JAVA_HOME & TOMCAT_HOME. Others told we have to set the CATALINA_HOME. Why we are using all this?

I am having my JDK1.3 at c:\jdk1.3
I am haing my Tomcat 5 at c:\Tomcat

Alos, I want to download the Servletr API and JSP API. But in the Apache Tomcat site, I can only able to view as a HTML page. There is no PDF Files for Servlet & JSP API to download. Please tell me where we can download those API Doc.

If possible, what are the other steps we have to take care for properly running the tomcat server.

You said that u r having jdk1.3 but it will not support for newer versions like(tomcat 5.5.9).Please look at the documentation first .
Please Install the jdk1.4 or 1.5 in u r system once it is installed please set the path and classpath for that.
After Installing the tomcat. No need to set any java_home or Tomcat_home or Catalina_home for the version (5.5.9).

Let us start learning on that........

Tomcat 5.5 requires JDK1.5.0 or higher.
It can be run with j2sdk1.4 if you install the compat packages.

It does not run on 1.3.
