what is common and shared directory in tomcat folder , when use each of them

What is different between tomcat_home\shared\lib and tomcat_home\common\lib
what is use of these folders ?

for what purpose we use them ?

Jar files placed in shared/lib will be placed into the classpath of all web applications. Jar files in common/lib will also be shared among the web apps and with Tomcat itself.

I put all shared jars in shared/lib except for JDBC drivers which, since I use container-managed connection pooling, must also be available to Tomcat and are therefore placed in common/lib.
