Just wondering, as the subject indicates, if Java Ranch needs any more moderators? If so, what are the duties of a moderator?
Thanks,
John

JavaRanch does need new moderators. We took on a couple of new moderators last week.
Ajith is currently composing a document that lists what a moderator can and might want to do.
Ajith?

Put simply, the moderator is responsible for keep the show running. The following list summarizes the duties/responsibilities of moderators.

  • Make sure all the messages under a forum adheres to the charter of the forum. In case of a digression move the message to an appropriate forum.
  • Enforce policies, keep a check on troublemakers.
  • Encourage and cultivate a healthy professional environment. Develop a good rapport with your readership and understand their requirements. Incorporate changes to the charter of the forum if necessary.
  • Build and maintain an FAQ for your forum. Update the FAQ regularly.
  • Participate in other JavaRanch site-related projects and activities.
  • Help identify other potential moderators.

  • If you want to learn more, take a look at JavaRanch Moderator Guidelines document.
John, hope this list gives you an idea about what is involved in this role( and what is not )

Looks good, Ajith.
It is my understanding that I need to submit a vitae/top 10 reasons why I would like to (or should) be a moderator. I'll get working on that.

What we have been doing lately is a nomination process. But a few people have jumped on board because they have offered to take on a slice of the ranch (one of the many pages), or have come up with a need for a new forum.
To get through the nomination stuff, you basically help others around the ranch. Answer questions, help to ease tension, stuff like that. Generally, a moderator will spot you and nominate you. Then another moderator will agree (or maybe disagree!). When all is said and done, if several moderators think you're a good egg, we extend the invite.

OK, I'll just keep doing what I have been doing then...
Don't think there have been any situations where any tensions have needed to be relieved. Maybe I just haven't been paying attention...

I really enjoyed reading the JavaRanch Moderator Guidelines. Is there any way to view the posts that link to "Moderator Only" threads?

Paul,
That is the privilege
Once you become a moderator, you will be granted access to the private forum.
