I think if you have 40 posts[Iam not sure of the number] or so under your belt you are promoted to a Ranchhand status.

Based on the number of messages you post, you get promoted from GreenHorn to RanchHand. When JavaRanch needs more helping hands( Moderators ), if you get chosen, you become a moderator( bartender ).
You become a sheriff when your contributions exceed many other moderators and if there is a vacant slot.
