I am using Tomcat 5.5.20..

Whether it is possible to have the application & deploy it other than webapps folder..?If so, how to do this?

Whether Tomcat is web server or web container.. ? What is Apache..?

A web app directory does not need to be in the webapps directory. You can use the docBase attibute of the Context to tell Tomcat where it is.

What's the difference between a web server and a web container?

Apache is a web server (see here)), and also the name of the project/foundation that is behind all the software at apache.org.

Thanks Ulf Dittmer..

I have tired to have the web application other than webapps folder:

I just created a war file for the wep application which is working properly under webapps folder.

Placed the war file under D:\MyAppln\BeerApplnWar.war

Created a new xml file called MyConf.xml as below:

Placed MyConf.xml file under D:\Tomcat-5.5.20\conf\Catalina\localhost

I don't know whether it's right place to place it..?

Restarted the web application and in the Admin Tool, I can able to see the Context(/MyConf) in the Host (localhost)..

But the BeerApplnWar.war was not deployed...

When i tried to http://localhost:8080/MyConf/
it's giving 404 error..?

Any help on it..?

If you use a war file, then docBase needs to point to the file, not the directory it's in, just like it's explained in the page I linked to.
