I am guessing that the following is the key problem;

SEVERE: Error deploying web application directory ROOT
java.lang.SecurityException: Servlet of class org.apache.catalina.servlets.InvokerServlet is privileged and cannot be loaded by this web application

None of the servlets get loaded so there are lots of errors on trying to shutdown.

Tomcat is going to need read/write/modify permission for the entire directory system it runs in.

This doesn't look like an OS permissions error.

I wonder if the makers of Tomcat have taken another step toward pushing the Invoker servlet out the door.
http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/config/context.html

Ranganath,
Can you try setting the privileged attribute to true and let us know if this works?
http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/config/context.html

If it does, I'll update our page on the InvokerServlet.

Tomcat only needs write permissions to the tomcat/logs directory, the tomcat/work directory, and, if you want to deploy and unpack applications with the manager application, the tomcat/webapps directory.

The rest can be set to read only.

Hmm...
According to coreservlets.com, there is a 'Privileged' restriction on the invoker servlet in version 6.0.

http://www.coreservlets.com/Apache-Tomcat-Tutorial/

In Tomcat 6 (but not Tomcat 5.5), you also need the privileged="true" entry in the Context element of context.xml. See the previous section for an example.

Also see:

Also,
See:
http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=41806
and
http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=41997

I don't see anything in the release notes or documentation about this but, since a Tomcat comitter, in response to two bugs, has stated that the invoker requires the privileged flag to be set to "true", I'm adding a note to the top of our InvokerServlet page.

Can you post the relevant part of your server.xml file?

Tomcat only needs write permissions to the tomcat/logs directory, the tomcat/work directory,

Are you sure about that? looks to me like tomcat needs to create directories under work when a new web application is deployed.

I don's see where you're defining your context in this serer.xml file.

If you're going to post it to the forum, it would be better to post in the property in question present.

Where is your context fragment file?
If you're putting it in META-INF/context.xml, you could be running into another problem. I don't think that Tomcat allows applications to declare themselves "priviledged" this way by default.

Try either adding it directly to server.xml or creating a context fragment file with the name of your application's contextPath + ".xml" in the tomcat/conf/Catalina/localhost directory.
To avoid confusion with autodeployment, you might want to name it something else (ie: test.xml) and hit the app with http://localhost:8080/test
.

hello ben,

I havent created the context.xml on my own. Out of box its been there when i downloaded it from the apache.org. And i just followed some manual in ubuntuforums.org which says i need to set it to true. But when i set to true also i am getting the same error. So if there is any way out let me know.

thank you

There was already one there, for your app?
Where is it and what is it named?

There's a simple and effective way to solve this issue: reinstall tomcat over the existing installation. Take care on have copy of changes you've made on xml files so you can restore them.

Good luck.
