Please explain what JBoss exactly is?

Can anyone, please explain me: What exactly is JBoss. I've heard it can easily deploy rmi objects, or something like that. But I hope it's more than that. Can anyone give me an exact explaination about what JBoss exactly is?

Basically, JBoss is an application server written in Java that can host business components developed in Java

I would say that JBoss is a highly customisable app server built from a JMX backbone. If you really wanted to you could strip out much of the J2EE stuff and shape it with your own components into your own java component server, with minimal hassle.
Of course, then it would be other than the JBoss J2EE server that it currently is.
