hardware or software for sticky session??

We plan to implement sticky session. Which is advisable? I want to understand pros and cons.
Through Hardware(ie. load balancer) or through software.

Our loadbalancer supports persistent mechanism.

I would suggest you read the loadbalancing/clustering documents from IBM and BEA. They are helpful even though they are for Websphere and Weblogic.
