Welcome to this week's book giveaway!
We're now giving away four copies of "StarOffice 5.2 Companion" by Floyd Jones and Solveig Haugland. And we are fortuante enough to have these guys hang out with us for a few days to answer questions and talk about the book.
Check it out! Solveig is the moderator of this forum!
Another point of trivia is that Floyd and Solveig work at Sun Microsystems. So do I! In face, these two work about 10 yards down the hall from me. Freaky!
Now for the boring rules type stuff. On Friday I'll comb the thread for potential winners. Messages must be pertinant to this forum. The name used must meet our rules. The message must be posted during the time of our promotion (now through Friday when I comb for names).
In this case, "pertinant to this forum" means that you can talk about Star Office or any other product that is taking advantage of Java technology.
Oh yeah, commenting on this thread does not count for the contest, but I'm happy to answer questions about the giveaway.
Have fun!

Hey y'all--bring on the questions and we'll give you answers. Most answers will even involve StarOffice! ;> (If we start talking about the election or about forcing daffodils in the winter, you'll know we're stalling and don't really know the answer.)
Ask if we tell you how to turn off all those annoyin features...if we are the only book out there to give clear full coverage to StarOffice Schedule multi-user setup and use...if Floyd really was a cheerleader in junior high...anything!

I am not familiar with Star Office.
Is it a stand alone product or should it be used in conjunction with Microsoft Office products?

Thank you Solveig for taking time to answer questions here at JavaRanch. I am not currently a user of StarOffice but I plan on setting up a Linux machine and downloading StarOffice very soon (I have heard positive things about it from a respected colleague of mine). JavaRanch, of course, will be one of my main resources for StarOffice info.

Eric,
Posting to this thread won't enter you into the giveaway. Posting to other threads in this forum will.
To answer your question. StarOffice replaces MicroSoft Office. Kinda like how MicroSoft Internet Explorer replaces Netscape.

What features are within Star Office that make it a worthwhile
product to support...?
Looking for Mr. Good Knowledge...
Thanks and Happy Holidays to all....
