How long has this been out? I never heard of it before. Is this an alternative to power point?

it has every feature that ms-office has and it has more flexibilities, like it is fully customizable and you can develop modules for it. as far as how far it has been out is beyond me i've had it since about may this year.

Hi Zoe, Brett,
The MS suite users say that, yeah, it's a lot like Office, especially Writer (the Word equivalent) and Calc (the Excel equivalent). It also has Impress, the PowerPoint equivalent, and:
- Draw (vector graphics)
- Image (raster graphics)
- Schedule (calendar program, single or multi user)
- Email and address book
- Base (database)
- Basic (a mostly-unusable macro language, unless you're a macro savant)
- Web (Writer-like Web editor)
Is that all? It seemed so much bigger when we were writing the book. ;>
Zoe, if you find yourself at Barnes and Noble, track down "StarOffice Companion." (It just came out, so you might need to ask them to check the back room.) It'll be in the linux section of the comp sci section, even though it runs on Solaris and Windows, too. Together with my coauthor Floyd Jones, I bleed ;> 7 months of my life into it, and we think we've done a pretty good job of creating a clear but comprehensive description of the features. Browse through a few of the sections; there'll be a lot more info on it.
And of course, you can download it from www.sun.com/staroffice, or order the CD, to play around with it.
Check out the giveaway this week--the StarOffice Companion giveaway thread in this forum lets you ask a question about the book, then get put in a drawing for a free copy!

I had also never heard of it. I was interested in checking out the website, but the link doesn't work. Is there another one Solveig?

Solveig - Would the Web editor you mentioned be similar to FrontPage or would it work more like Notepad when writing HTML?
Thanks -
Chris

Hi Chris,
It's like FrontPage but without the web page management features. It's fine, with graphics and other insertion capabilities, frames, etc. Though there are some odd things that happen sometimes between browsers.

I could be wrong, but I think Brett mentioned in some other thread that he or she was 14 or 15 (go ahead and correct me if you want to). There's nothing wrong with being that age, but I know I was blunter (or whatever) at that stage of life.
