Star Office is a suite of Office applications in competition with Microsoft Office. Spreadsheet, word processor, powerpoint presentation-type stuff. The slides can be converted to static html pages pretty easily which I think is cool.

It's true that speed isn't one of its advantages. If you're running off a network, steal a CD and just install it locally. That'll help. It's also running an entire set of applications, not just one app at a time, like MS.
It opens other documents like a charm, though. You can't beat it for crossplatform and interoperability.

I recently installed Suse Linux on my PC, after years of grumbling about MS. I'm currently running Windows 95 and Linux, but am trying to use Linux more. Star Office came with the Suse distribution, and I found it to be an excellent alternative to MS Office. I don't find it slow- it is installed on my machine, and it has all of the functions I would use in MS Office applications. At last there is some quality competition for MS!
