iPlanet Application Server: Designing and Building J2EE Solutions by David Ogren, Martin Gee
Your insiders guide to iAS, from a systems engineer on the iPlanet team and one of the leading independent iAS implementation consultants
In this first-ever guide to iAS, iPlanet insiders show you how to master the ins and outs of this leading J2EE application server, build Java enterprise applications that harness its full
power, and manage application deployments for peak performance. Youll find out how to customize an iAS development environment, optimize application design for iAS
architecture, and tackle administration tasks such as clustering and registry tuneups. Throughout, the authors explain quirks and undocumented features, demonstrate time-saving
tricks, and pinpoint best practices for a host of mission-critical iAS issues.

FYI on David Ogren:

some time ago I was a frequent reader of the iplanet.ias.general newsgroup on secnews.netscape.com (before it got turfed).

I always found David Ogren to be a very knowledgeable and helpful iPlaneteer. So given that I'm talking about iPlanet (no SP), SP1 and SP2 era, I think he displayed quite a bit of grace under pressure.

I wish this book were available 6 months to a year ago. We're currently upgrading to iAS 6.5, and we'll be migrating from iAS to (read: replacing with) WebLogic 7.0 in Sept/Oct. Various parties here felt that market share, partnerships, and other factors on WebLogic's side made it a better platform for the long term.
iPlanet certainly has the technology to compete, but the admin tools, customer support, IDE integration issues, and lack of up-to-dateness soured some people here, which forced the comparison to and eventual selection of WebLogic as the corporate J2EE server.
Hopefully the book will help those who are just starting to try iAS out, and hopefully iAS 7.0 will address most if not all the issues that have kept it from shining.

No problem, David.

Just don't do a search for my name plus 'iPlanet' and/or 'rant'

FYI, JavaRanch is going to be doing a book giveaway on my book in this forum soon. I know this forum is pretty quiet, but you might want to drop by during the first week of September.

ComputerSage,
Please note that JavaRanch has only one rule that we strictly enforce and that is the naming standard. See: http://www.javaranch.com/name.jsp.
Please change you display name to match the criteria you agreed to when you registered. And you should note that posts made with invalid names will not be eligible to with in the give-away.
Thanks!

The best online resources are from Sun right now:
Product News
Downloads (iAF & IDE plug-ins)
Tech Notes
Sample Code

Unfortunately, I've been absent from the Sun forums for a while. I've been busy with the end of Sun's fiscal year and with beta stuff related to the release of 7.0.
I've known about JavaRanch for a while, but there wasn't much traffic in this forum so I only checked occaisionally. If we continue to have frequent postings after the promotion week, I'll continue to post regularly.

I'm thinking about a new battle cry. Maybe "Not in the face! Not in the face!" Any thoughts tiny ad?
