capturing system.out|err on iplanet 6.0 in solaris

good day,
I'm trying to capture system.out and .err log messages from our servlets. the programmers
manual suggests using ./start -shell
and ./ns-httpd -d <config_dir> which works
fine for ports > 1024, but doesn't work
for ports < 1024 even though I'm starting up
the server as root. (the listener is configured
to run as nobody) any suggestions?
