I was looking for a java hosting site to run a small project on (servlets). At one of the java web hosting sites, they were discussing Java Saas. I'd appreciate it if someone could explain what it is,and its advantages. From what I understand (the little that I do) an application is treated as a service? And you can spread things out across many JVMs? But I am not really clear on what that means or why someone would want to do that.

Any clarification on Saas and help is much appreciated.

Welcome to JavaRanch.

SAAS usually means that web-based software is run commercially, and can be used by customers who pay for it on a month-by-month or per-usage basis.) I've never quite understood what the difference to ASP -application service providing- is supposed to be. Maybe the term ASP has fallen in disrepute during the dotcom crash).

SAAS applications certainly need to be able to run on multiple servers, so in Java terms they would likely be made of distributable web apps. I'd think that for small-scale projects you can ignore whether a hosting provider claims to be SAAS-ready or not.
