The call for papers has gone up for the pattern languages of programs (PLoP) 2003 conference. Those of you who have been around here for a while may remember that last year I was the program chair for this conference -- we actually had a few people decide to come because they came across it at JavaRanch!
I suggest you read the CFP and consider submitting a paper to the conference -- PLoP is different in that it's not a traditional conference where you sit all day and listen to "talking heads" drone on about the same old topics. Instead, it's organized as a "Writer's workshop" where patterns that you write are reviewed and improved by a group of other pattern authors.
The best way to understand patterns is to try to write some yourself. We provide help and assistance to authors in the process (as the CFP describes) and accept submissions in all areas of computer science. What's more, since the conference is very small, this is your opportunity to not just meet but work closely with industry luminaries like Martin Fowler, Ralph Johnson, and others.
So give it a try! Submit a pattern or two -- you won't regret it.
