Sun Certified Web Component Developer Study Guide (Exam 310-081) (Oracle Press)

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Hi guys,

All posts I've seen on JavaRanch tells the best books for preparation aiming the SCWCD exam are Head First Servlets and JSP and SCWCD Exam Study Kit Second Edition

However, I've just googled the Sun Certified Web Component Developer Study Guide (Exam 310-081) book which is from the same publisher of the SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 Study Guide (Exam 310-055) book from Keith Sierra and Bert Bates authors and which I found very helpful when preparing for my SCJP certification.

Could you please post here your opinions about the Sun Certified Web Component Developer Study Guide (Exam 310-081) (Oracle Press) book when comparing to Head First and SCWCD Exam Study Kit ones ?

If you were a JSP/Servlet newcomer preparing for the SCWCD exam, what book/books would you choose ?

Just for your information, I recently put such question here but I found Bunkhouse Porch the most appropriate place to put such question regarding books.

It's not my intention to crosspost my threads.

Thanks in Advance.

Edisandro.

Hi Edisandro, nice to have you hanging out on the Porch. I think your question could probably fit in either forum.

It's not my intention to crosspost my threads.

Um, so it was an accident? Just kidding.

You might want to decide which thread you want the conversation to happen in and direct people from the other thread to it. Otherwise there might be 2 different conversations going on, and people will feel like they missed out on one or the other. Plus it makes it easier to retrieve all that good information later.

Good luck with your exam preparation!

Pauline

Hi Pauline,

Thanks a lot for your prompt reply.

I've just removed my previous post on that thread concerning my opinions request regarding this book.

As I didn't get any replies concerning this question on that thread, I think nothing has been missed and I think we can concentrate our discussion here.

By the way, have you ever heard something about this book ? I'm really in doubt whether it's enough for SCWCD preparation.

At Amazon.com there are only three reviews about it just because it was released in the third quarter of 2005.

I've seen on JavaRanch that HFJS is a good book for SCWCD preparation, but isn't this book out of date ? As far as I know HFJS was released in 2004 and since this year, some changes have occurred such as a new Tomcat release, maybe some specs changes and so on ....

Your opinion would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Edisandro.

I'm sorry I can't help you out there Edisandro. That cert isn't one that I've had to chase down, so I'm not familiar with those books.

By HFJS do you mean Head First Servlets and JSP? Maybe I can drum up one the authors themselves to address this question...

Thanks again Pauline for your prompt reply.

Yes, I would be thankful if you could ask the authors themselves to address this question.

Best Regards,

"What's the best book" is the most common question at our Web Component Certification (SCWCD) forum. Skimming through the threads you should see what's already been said.

I've already given much praise about this book myself.

If that's not enough to convince you, I recommend reading the stories from our SCWCD Wall of Fame. You will notice a very prominent message about this book in each one.

Oh, and the spec didn't change. I think vendors would be pretty pissed if it did. The book will not be "outdated" until a new test comes out to cover Java 5 EE. When the test does release, the authors will more than likely release a new edition of HFSJ (and let me be on the review team *cough* *cough*).

Hey Marc,

Thank you very much for you prompt and valuable reply.

It's always good to hear such opinions from smart guys as you are.

Now I surrender I'm really convinced that HFJS is the better stuff to start my self taught journey.

Thanks Marc and Pauline for your full attention on this topic.

Greetings from Brazil - Edisandro.
