For starters, I would recommend reading the classic "Gang of Four (GoF)" book on design patterns, entitled:

Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object Oriented Software

Also, I would suggest learning UML diagrams such as Activity, Sequence, Use Case, and Class diagrams:

UML Distilled: A Brief Guide to the Standard Object Modeling Language (3rd Edition)

A really good one is the Design Patterns book by Alan Shalloway:

Design Patterns Explained: A New Perspective on Object-Oriented Design (2nd Edition)
