One typical categorization of different levels of testing is
unit testing,
integration testing, and
functional tests.
These are often considered to be automated (unit and integration testing practically always, functional testing is perhaps not so often fully automated). In addition to this, there's usually a need to carry out some kind of manual testing in the form of
context-driven or
exploratory testing.
Finally, we also need to test for non-functional properties of our systems which means some kind of
load testing,
usability testing, and so forth.
