Hi,
....How do you find The Complete UML Training Course, Multimedia book?Does it make sense to go through it before taking the test?I am concerned as IBM has recommended this book at its site (although it is an alternative!!).
Thanks in advance,
Regards,

Hi Desai,
I don't have answer to your question, but I have a suggestion. Why don't you go taking the actual test? After quite a long time of studying and reading quite a few good material, you should be able to pass easily. Even if you don't pass, I think taking one real exam is ten times better than reading a material about that exam.

Hi Vim,
I have just started with UML - finished with just 17 Chapters of Larman - am midway of 18th Chapter on Patterns.I donot think, I am in a very good position to take the test. Also, without putting sufficient efforts, I donot wish to appear for the test.I am targeting to take this test by May 2001 end.By that time, I should be reasonably OK with UML.

My objective is not only to pass the Test, but also to acquire a decent knowledge of UML, to show it to my future employers!!For that, I suppose reading would be important.
Please let me know, if you found the above book helpful for the Test preparation
Thanks for your advice.
Regards,

Hi,
I do not have that book & in fact answers to all the questions in real exam is in the UML distilled already. So if you focus on the exam --> you already have best material.
Talking about practice, you should apply UML knowledge in some projects (maybe not official output, but just showing what would you do with newly learned literature) --> it helps a lot in memorize things and knowing how to infer UML & OOAD theory.
IBM 486 exam asks lots on scenario & practice, so you should focus and think by yourself
If you are interested in advance OOAD/UML topics to enforce it in your projects (486 exam focus on very fundamental things only). I would suggest other materials.

Hi Vim,
Thank you for your response.
As I mentioned earlier, I have started with another recommended IBM book for Test 486 - Applying UML and Patterns, Craig Larman.
After I finish with this book, how much time (a rough estimate would be fine, considering that I am putting about 4 hours per day!!), should I keep for reading UML Distilled, Martin Fowler.
TIA,
Sandeep

Some of the customer reviews at www.amazon.com include a description of what's inside the package. Then you can decide how urgently you need this.

Hi John,
I have already invested in the multimedia book - The Complete UML Training Course.
Yes, the reviews on Amazon is not very impressive. But I had purchased it, only because IBM had recommended it.
Now I am finding myself short of time.Hence, I have posted this message to know if any of the test-takers felt a need to go through this book, after reading Applying UML and Patterns and UML Distilled?
Thanks in advance,
Sandeep

The pre-assessment exam has several questions from Applying UML and Patterns.
