Hai friends,
I got UML distilled and read almost 40 pages;
Before buying the book on seeing the great reviews about that book I thought that it will be like RHE or Khalid's books for JCP.
But for my disappointment it is full of crisp theory and even after reading 40 pages I am not sure what to read/skip;
How to read this book?
Do u all recommend any mugging? (I hate that).

I am am surprised to see 'full of crisp theory' as a critique. Isn't that a good thing?
UML Distilled is a book about UML. It is not a book to prepare you for the IBM exam. I suspect this is why you are disappointed if you expected something similar to RHE/Khalid etc.
One of the main strengths of this book is that is - as implied by the title - very concise. You should be able to read it quite comfortably in a couple of days. I would not spend too much time deciding what to read or skip - just read the book end and end, and enjoy Fowlers rather distinctive writing style.
regards,
paul.

Sundaram,
I agree with paul. May be you can try by other side.
Read these articles, by Martin Fowler, similar but more
concise than UML Distilled. http://www2.awl.com/cseng/titles/0-201-89542-0/techniques/index.htm
Download some UML tool, I suggest Together, and start playing with diagrams. After, those concepts will make more sense.
Good luck,
Adrian

Hi,
I am going to prepare for IBM 486.
Currently reading the second book mentioned by IBM in the preparation sections. The Larmann Applying UML and Patterns.
I think now: To really introduce myself to this UML, OOD/A, Patterns, UP, Project Management stuff UML distilled has a too narrow focus. Use it more for quickly looking up UML things.
Like XML makes not much sense without DTDs/Schemas, XSLT, SAX and DOM-Api, UML does not make much sense without the mentioned things.
As a person who does programming AND project management in his job the Larman book gave me great insights (I think so, at least).

I am going for 486 too.
how is the Larmann Applying UML and Patterns?
Do you think it is a good idea to skip UML distilled
and just go to Larmann Applying UML and Patterns?

thanks.

Hi there,
there's no easy way to clear 486. I prepared for 4 days for SCJP and cleared it with 88%. For 486 I studied for 1.5 months (1 hour a day on average) and cleared it with 81%. Please leave this certification alone if you just want to clear it and not learn what is UML and OOAD. This is one of the only certification that is still worth something. Please do not try to make another SCJP with 486.
thank you.
