For ex., any first MS exam leads to MSCP. Only next titles, like certified administrators, developers, engineer, etc. may have intermediary, not leading to a new certification, exams.
It is quite strange that IBM 486 test is not valued per se since UML is required in various areas, platforms, software, etc. (and not only in connection with a WebSphere or Visual Age)?!

No, I dont think there are any recognised UML only certifications.
What IBM are certifying is that you are an OOAD developer -- that is more than just the 486 exam.
They feel that you must also be a java programmer (155) and have IDE skills (282) -- in fact they also offer options, and you can decide to do Oracle exams instead if you dont like IBM (see jCert).
Your question is like asking if you can get a 1 year degree -- the value of the certification is made up, in part by the dificulty in obtaining it.
You should also ask yourself why you want the certificate -- if you want a piece of paper saying you know UML then sit the exam, and get a score report.
If you want to be a better developer, study for the certification -- you will surely improve.
If you want a valued qualification, then follow the jCert path.

James,
In all posts I answer that certification is needed if you want to enter in (get a job). The time and money are to be minimized in this endevour
If you are unemployed it is hard to be any better
If you already have job why would you ever need loosing time and money for certification?
Smth wrong with this logic?

G,
Having a job is not the end to all. Staying there is! Just getting a job should not stop you from learning new technology and test/acknowledge your knowledge by the certifications. If you're not interested in learning new technologies, in a industry like IT, the chances are you will always be looking for a job!
Sorry javaranchers, I know this is a forum to address issues on OO and UML now just why certification . But couldn't help it.
Later,
Hema

If you do not have a job, a certification or two may separate you
from your competition. If you do have a job, your company will often
pay for your certification tests/materials. Why? Because it will
encourage you to continue studying and learning, which will help
to prevent the company's IT department from growing stagnant
and/or complacent. Some companies (mostly consulting companies) will
actually reward their employees for getting certified. My company
will not actually pay me extra for getting certified, but it is
part of my "goals" for the year, which will affect raises, etc. Finally,
the best time to prepare yourself for a new job is while you still have
a job. Time is on your side, and you often have access to more resources.
Maybe you don't want to leave your current job and maybe you never will,
but it always makes me feel better to know that I would be able to get another
job if I had to. Hundreds of thousands of people in the US alone were laid off
over the past 6 months or so; better safe than sorry. Just my 2¢

Menon,
it is not crime to discuss certification here because:
  • there is no separate forums about certification in OO, patterns and UML;
  • this concept is of paramount importance (to loose or not to loose a lot of time and a lot of money (loosing time studying instead of earning money)

  • Michael,

When I took a week from my leave to prepare for SCPJ2 test, I counted using Internet access and PC at my job (my home PC was broken). My boss told that I may not use resources for personal needs. I was told that certification in the area of my work is my personal need. All companies in Portugal work for out-sourcing (they do not develop products, they sell services&workers to clients). They are intertested to have a lot of cheap people and show off a lot of work to clients.
I am the only certified programmer in my company and one of a few whose contracts will not be renovated

Not in Portugal. I worked already in a dozen of companies in Portugal

it always makes me feel better to know that I would be able to get another job if I had to.

I would say it is the most important but currently the offer is 0.
    Certification for me:
    1) to maintain my spirit occupied at home while I shal be unemployed;
2)to be independent on voluntarism of employers and market
    3)to get a job.
3a)to get not just a money for living but more interesting job!
I am immigrant and I was, so far, admitted for something where I was unexperienced only ONCE (during 7 years abroad): to program in COBOL when there was a great lack of hands (millenium bug, transfer to euro)
