Hi,
Is there a free/shareware design/uml tool available anywhere out there that is worth downloading/using?
Thanks in advance.

Check out Poseidon for UML, based on Open Source AgroUML.

Ilja & Gopi,
I'm usually of the bar-napkin or scribble-your-design-while-on-the-subway or on-the-whiteboard-in-the-office school of OOP. I've just gotten to the point where this type of methodology, although beneficial for those "ah-hah" moments is, well, inefficient and unorganized, (and slightly insane).
A UML tool will cure me of this insanity.
On that note, Gopi, thanks very much for the URL - this is exactly what I was looking for.

Interesting! May I ask you what you observed happened so that it became inefficient?

Hey bartender,
I've been trying to think of a clever reply, but basically I just think it was time...
Now, How about a Hefeweizen?

Hi Joshua,
Check out Enterprise Architect (EA Home Page). I have tried Rational Rose, Poiseidon, JVision and Enterprise Architect and found EA to be the best (even better than the most expensive of the above list) and the cheapest to boot
Regards,
Fintan

Hi Fintan,
Unifortunately, I was not successful installing EA on my home pc or office pc.
I'm using Poseidon. The price is right but there are limitationations:
For example, one cannot create a new stereotype. One can only choose from a list of given streotypes. Also it likes to chew up alot of memory, often to the point where the CPU becomes strangled and I have to kill the app.
Still, Poseidon is free, it was easy download & install.

I think Poseiden UML is pretty cool for modelling and its easy to use also. I just happened to downlown this tool after reading this post, and iam glad to say that i was able to create a class diagram quite comfortably. The interface is very intuitive and i would say that its a very good tool , atleast for UML beginners like me.
Thanks for bring this tool to my notice.
