I am trying to write a design documentation in word format, and I would like to embed uml diagrams into this word doc so that I can explain things more clearly. I am wondering what tools I can use to achieve this?
I use Rational Rose and copy/paste into Word all the time. I also have a tiny tool that generates ASCII text sequence diagrams I can paste into posts at the ranch. Rose is big $$. Have you tried ArgoUML? It would be worth the cost ($0) to see how well it copy/pastes or exports images or whatever it does.
A good question is never answered. It is not a bolt to be tightened into place but a seed to be planted and to bear more seed toward the hope of greening the landscape of the idea. John Ciardi
Thank you, Stan. I will try ArgoUML out to see how it goes.

If rational is not available & MS Visio is available: you can draw the uml diagrams using visio(save in jpg format) and download in to your word document.
I would simply reference the diagrams that you need in Word. ...

That's ideal for sure. I've gotten away with producing a few "required documents" for enterprise review as Wiki pages with links to existing presentations and tables and such. But I'm in a situation now where somebody is copying tons of data from the Wiki into a giant Word doc because he promised officer level people a Word doc. We keep warning him that we do not intend to maintain this doc over time. It's going to be another sad Write Once Read Never document. Sigh.

Sounds like there's a potential for a tool there, sort of like Rational's SODA add-on for their toolset. The tool would spider the Wiki and produce the doc.
We actually own Soda but have never used it. Neat idea.
