It is really challanging Because, windows API requires C function which will be started as a separate thread. In addition, it requires function to "install", "uninstall", "start" and "stop". All these have to be C functions. You have to write the service in C/C++ (see msdn.microsoft.com to find out how).
Inside your service however, you can start your JAVA process or kill your JAVA process (in from start and stop functions respectively)

i want to know whether we can add java app (where app is a java class file) directly to windows service. I DONT WANT To CONVERT JAVA APPLICATION TO EXE FILE. i simply want to add java.exe and java program file as target for windows service.
WINDOWS SERVICE CAN USE JAVA.EXE AS EXECUABLE FILE AND CLASSPATH AND PROGRAM TO BE EXECUTED CAN BE AUGUMENTS THAT ARE CONFIGURED IN SERVICE.
START/STOP should work through WINDOWS SERVICES. I DONT WANT BATCH/EXE FILE TO CONTROL START/STOP OPERATIONS.

I passed couple of months ago. Since I browsed through the disscussions here to get some ideas, I think I owe it to this forum to explain my efforts.
For part I, Cade's book is sufficient
For part II/III, go through the petstore example inside out. Touch all architectural issues in you disscussion. example, session management, persistance, security, scalability , availability etc.
Good Luck
Just create a policy file which looks like this
/* AUTOMATICALLY GENERATED ON Tue Sep 04 16:51:47 CDT 2001*/
/* DO NOT EDIT */
grant {
permission java.net.SocketPermission "*:1024-65535", "connect,accept";
permission java.net.SocketPermission "*:80", "connect,accept, resolve";
permission java.io.FilePermission "<<ALL FILES>>", "read, execute, write";
};

IT WORKS FOR ME

Thanks for your comments. I just used a linear search in criteriaFind().

I am almost done with the assignment. Couple of questions
1. Do we need to document inner class (Event Handler)
2. Is it OK to use code from SUN example (I used a FilterClass for selecting files)
3. Is it OK to use code from this news group and give credit. Or should re-write it completely.
Thanks for your reply.

GUI
Hi, I am trying to do the GUI part of the assignment and I am new to JFC/SWING. I am finding it kind of hard to manage the layout with a layout manager. Do you think it will be OK if I dont use any layout manager? Just use absolute positioning. I am curious to know what most people have done.
Thanks for your replay.

1. Do I need to make this method synchronized? I believe so, because I am using StringTokenizer which I believe is not thread safe. Please share thoughts.
2. The Data class contains deprecated methods from String class. Can I use the methods that use 'default' encoding.
