Are there any sites where I can get promotion vouchers for SCJP? I got some promotion code for my Oracle Certification exam from somewhere. Did any one use such vouchers to take SCJP?
Any information is highly appreciated.
Thanks,
V
While doing some examples in Marcus Green's site I have encountered this one.

class Base {
int i=99;
public void amethod(){
System.out.println("Base.amethod()");
}
Base(){
amethod();
}
}
public class RType extends Base{
int i=-1;
public static void main(String argv[]){
Base b = new RType();
System.out.println(b.i);
b.amethod();
}
public void amethod(){
System.out.println("RType.amethod()");
}
}

When I ran this I thought(Even Green said) the output would be
RType.amethod
99
RType.amethod
But the output I got on my machine is
99
Base.amethod
Any clues?
vasuma

P.S: I have JDK 1.3.1. on my machine.

1) From a model-view-controller programming model perspective,
which two of the following statements are true with respect
to a well-layered web application built with Servlets and
JSPs?

a) Servlets fill the role of the controller.
b) Servlets generate HTML and interact with business objects.
c) Business domain objects are commonly used in JSPs.
d) Servlets provide JSPs with information from the business
domain.

2) Which of the following statements BEST describes a well-
layered web application?

a) The business model has knowledge of the presentation
layer.
b) The presentation layer has knowledge of the business
model.
c) Business domain logic is coded in JSPs.
d) Business domain objects make decisions about how the
presentation layer behaves.
e) The presentation layer encapsulates the manner in which
information is conveyed to the user

Thinking in java is the best. I read core java along with it, but its size made me feel nervous( its so heavy , I had to lie down on my side and keep it on the bed to read it ).Since TIJ is free, I recommend downloading it. Hope this helps.

Rahul,
Where did you get the book? Can you give me the link? Thanks, I will appreciate it.

Yes. It started working when I put it under the ext directory. Thanks Hardy.

Sean,
Thanks. I downloaded the servlet jar file into my jdk/bin directory. When I tried to compile after that, I am still getting the same error. What could have gobe wrong? Because I have downloaded it to the jdk/bin which is already there in the class path, I didnt have to edit the classpath.

Hi,
This is kinda basic, I would appreciate if someone cares to answer this... I tried to compile a servlet. I have not downloaded servlets api. So the compiler gave an error saying javax.servlets and servlets.http packages dont exist. Now where should I download the javax.servlets and javax.servlets.http to? Into the same directory where my jdk is there?

Tim, the whole point is that - that i have cleared the exam without doing any coding.
Jane, i got it. i was adding the bin directory in classpath in autoexec.bat. i got it when i added it in the path. Now that I know how to do it, it looks so simple and basic. Tim, I am not surprised that you are annoyed.
Jane and others, be ready to answer my doubts in jdbc, servlets, jsp and possibly ejbs. I love this place. How did I miss this before?

no, jane, this is not about the websphere. i have downloaded jdk1.4 separately. i need servelet class files to be deployed in websphere.i can do it in visualage and then export from there, but i want to do it the rudimentary way.

Jane and Greg, I was trying to compile a servlet from the jdk/bin directory and it is giving errors saying javax.servlets package doesnt exist. Looks like I have to download servlets package separately. Right? If so, where from from sun site? And if I want to compile my servlets into class files ( which are then to be deployed in websphere app server) where should I download this javax package to? To the same directory where my jdk is there? I would appreciate if you can answer my above question and this together.

Thanks Jane and Greg, It worked. I am able to compile from jdk1.4/bin using javac filename. but once compiled, I am not able to run it . I am able to run only by physically moving the file to the bin directory. For example,
C:\jdk1.4\bin: javac c:\someDir\Somefile.java works.
c:\jdk1.4\bin: java c:\someDir\Somefile doesnt.
I have to move Somefile from someDir to jdk1.4\bin compile there and then run from this directory (jdk14/bin). Where am I amiss?
