Thanks Deepak and Manish for answering. I got it clarified from another HR of the same company, asked her what my take home would be per month. She told it'll be Gross - whatever deductions.. But I'm still not sure whether or not I should sign on the letter with that statement. I asked a few more people about that statement, they all said it's misleading. So now I've requested an acquaintance, who has an acquaintance in that company, to check if this is how all their offer letters are.. with "Basic" shown as Consolidated salary. Let's see what feedback I get.

Hello all,

I'm from Mumbai, India. Need some advice. I have received an offer from a CMM level company. As per the salary structure document I received, my monthly gross salary comes to around 30k. But one sentence in the appointment letter, which I received the next day confused me a little. Below is the statement -

"You will receive a consolidated salary of Rs. 10200/- (Rupees Ten Thousand Two Hundred Only) per month and a Special Allowance of Rs. 1200/- (Twelve Hundred Only) per month. (Please note your salary package may be restructured by adjusting “Special Allowance” without affecting the gross salary)."

As per their salary structure, "10200" is the "Basic", "1200" is the Special Allowance, as mentioned and there are some other components in the "Monthly" part, which all sum up to around 30000.

So this statement confused me. I'd also shown this snippet to couple of my senior managers, they also thought that this could be a typo or something and asked me to clear it with the HR of the new company. The HR didn't clearly answer my question about how much salary I'll be getting in hand per month. She just said that I was the first person to ask her a question like this and if this was the case then none would join their company.

So can anyone please help me understand

1) The difference between "Gross Salary" and "Consolidated Salary". 2) And is it okay to sign on offer letter with above statement?

I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rob,

Thanks a lot for pointing that out! I checked equals() method signature 2-3 times before posting the question.. should've done that for hashCode() method too.. Quite a silly mistake! Dunno where to hide

Thanks again!

Hi,

This is probably a very basic question, but please help me understand where I'm going wrong. Please see below code -

I thought that if I override equals() method to compare if two objects of my User class are meaningfully equivalent, it'll give the same effect like Strings, when adding a similar object in a Set, but it's not. I tried a couple of things and in the end, simply returned "true" from the equals() method, but still the same result. What am I understanding/doing wrong here?

Thanks in advance!

ETA: Forgot to give the output - In the output, first set shows 2 elements "ABC" and "LMN", second set shows 2 elements 1 and 2, but third one shows 3 elements 2, 1, 1.

Hi,

The thing is that I'm currently facing problem because I've done my graduation through Distance Education, as I've mentioned in the first post. So I'm not sure that adding another Distance Education degree will help or not.

Hi,

Thanks all of you for responding.. and Christophe and Rajeev, thanks a lot for those links.. they're very helpful.

I have targeted Jan 2011 for giving the exam.. hope to be able to meet the target!

Hi all,

I'm planning to give SCWCD 1.5 and I had a couple queries..

I've already given SCJP 1.4 long time back (some 3-4 years ago may be). One friend had told that I'd need to give upgrade exam of SCJP first. I checked on the Sun Certification site and from what I understood, that's not really the case.. Any edition of SCJP is OK for giving SCWCD 1.5. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, I have Head First Servlets and JSP 1.4 book, I'd bought it long time back, but couldn't quite make time to prepare.. I've just started to prepare again and I wanted to know - is that book enough or should I trade that one for newer version? Are there a lot of differences?

Please advice. Thanks in advance!

Sorry for being blunt. Calling any degree, a piece of paper just because you do not have it, is insult to those many who earned with hard work and their talent. Almost every award is piece of paper. Even 1000 Rs is piece of paper. No it is not piece of paper. It is money right? Then this is also not piece of paper, it is degree which is a proof that you have been evaluated at certain standard and you have qualified for it.

It's ok, why say sorry if you had already decided to be blunt! Anyways, I'd like to sincerely apologize from my side to anyone who might've got offended.. absolutely no offense was intended for anyone.. I was trying to convey something else altogether.. all I was trying to convey in my response was that may be the employers should at least give candidates a fair chance to technically prove that they're as good as another person with a reputed degree from a reputed college. I hope you guys would understand that I never realized/imagined what I was writing would offend anyone, else I would never have written it.

Hi Sumit,

Totally agree with you. But unfortunately, not many employers agree with it. Many big companies explicitly specify that they want people with full-time courses only and stuff like that. If a person has done part-time course, they wouldn't even bother checking that person's technical knowledge. That's where the "piece of paper" is required.. nonetheless, I'm still trying.. meanwhile thinking of MSc.

Ok, I'm back to my confusion of MCA or MBA or MSc! Although, MSc full time, along with full time job (if lack of attendance is not a problem for MSc course) sounds good enough, because I just want to show degree / PG full time, so that they at least give me a chance to prove that I'm technically competent.

Hi,

Thanks Arun and Kj for your inputs. Few of my colleagues also gave me suggestion of doing MBA (IT) and few of them told MCA would be better. I'm totally confused. I'm not very sure about spending 3 years doing MCA, but I also want to lighten that "Distance Education Graduate" spot from my resume. Will MBA be good for that?

If you have option of doing Full time MCA. In short term your full time MCA may not look adding much value as you already experienced but, in long term it will add good value. In future when you realize that you want to do MCA, you may find it difficult.

Hi Kj,

Yes, that's what I've been thinking.. if I've to do it, I should do it now. I believe the I need to give CET in Feb-2011. Can you suggest some preparation books for MCA-CET or any classes I should join?

Hi,

Thanks Jeanne for replying. Well, MCA is Masters in Computer Applications. Someone told me that since I've done BSc (which is considered less than a BE degree), doing MCA now will make me equivalent to a BE.

Yes, Question 2) is kind of answered, need to check once with the colleges in my area, which provide the course.

Regarding Question 5), actually I was hoping that someone who has done Full time MCA could tell me whether it's so hard that I should quit the job and fully concentrate on that course only or is it easy enough that I can study for that and also work full time (or may be part time).
