I have been thinking of this also. I have about a year of experience (programmers cert and soon tobe developers I hope) I have also worked with vb in the past. C# is very similiar to java, and of course the IDE wins. Seems like it will be a very productive tool. Difficult to gauge the demand. Who will hire c# people? Many vb users will go to vb.net (a good sized leap into an oo language) It seems like c# is the better of the two as it was grown with .net and is not based on a language that was not oo. I checked on monster and a few jobs are listed. Many companies will be making the switch to .net. It is much superior to the old vb I think.

This has probably already come up but how about being able to recommend especially good posts and have a daily list of the top posts across the boards so that we may read about good discussions without having to check on every forum? Like they have in the fool.com

Hello
I have the scjp2 and soon will be done with the scjd. I have some exp with java, and other technologies. (like vb)
I have seen more entry-mid type people in vb getting placed and as more companies will be changing to the .Net environment my java could be leveraged to good effect with c#. I care about speed of development and see that .Net could potentially make it much faster to program. The GUI is easy and some of the server side seems to be simpler. Have others looked into this? Is it too early to try to make such a leap? Wait to see what issues with .Net come to light? So much hype it is difficult to separate the wheat from the chaffe.
My other idea was to set up my own website to display my project work. I have done this in the past when I knew much less and it seemed to have met with good response. I saw an example posted here ealier and was impressed.
Or work on getting the next certs like XML or the server one. Which first? Right now servlets are fresher in my memory so I could maybe get that cert in a couple of weeks?
Have also looked into volunteering into sourceforge.net but that does seem intimidating. It would look good on my resume though, and would keep me programming on intereting things, maybe better than the toy programs I would come up with.
Eventually will probably do all of them. But which is of the most immediate use?
What will lead to a job?
PS really curious to what you guys know of C#. It is intereting b/c it is the only language developed with the .net platform and therefore to fully use the capabilites of .net c# may be supior to vb.net (although both really are very similiar in capabilities-moslty just syntax diff right?)

I will look into the Hash Set to see if I should use that. But now that it works I dont want to change. It is kind of cool using something different.
I think Treeset is sort of a replacement for Vector if you don't care that the information will not by synchronized. So it is faster.
Thanks for the comments.
The Treeset is good for sorting. I am just using RMI IIOP so that is why I have the corba message. Just a slighly differently implementation.
Found my problem. In the Treeset I was using my own defined comparator. Not realizing that the comparator itself also had to be serializable to go over the net. I guess I keeps some kind of record that goes over the network?
Been really frustrated with the following problem. Help would be really appreciated.
In local mode it works fine.
In remote mode it appears to successfully export from the server and the client seems to find it. When the combo box info comes over I get the following error
Corba Unkown Exception 0 Maybe; nested exception is: org.omg.CORBA.portable.UnknownException: minor code: 0 completed Maybe (this shows up on my display)
On the server the trace says
Exception in thread "Thread-3" org.omg.CORBA.BAD_PARAM: minor code: 1398079494 completed: Maybe

java.io.ObjectOutputStream.writeObject(Unkown Source)
java.util.TreeSet.writeObject(Unknown Source)
Any guidance would be much appreciated
Jeff
PS I am using a Treeset. (which seems to be serializable) but from all the Unkown Source that shows up on the dos screen maybe it is not finding the remote class correctly even though it gets that far?
I take it then that the code below will have no affect? I write out information on the JSP page through attributes and tags and when I use the history page that is still their. The forms with inboxes are cleared, but for the info I put on the page using stored information it shows up. I can solve the problem of using the back button with some java script (although very inelegantly)

Trying to use Dos to run programs. I can compile fine but when I try to run programs I keep getting a Exception found in thread "Main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: <name of program>

Hello,
I am looking for advice. I have less than a yr of experience, and that mostly vb, asp and such. Only about 2 mos of Java. I would like to go back to Java and so wondering if I should put the time in for the cert, and then look, or just see what I can get. I am in Denver so the market here is fair compared to other places. Oh and I was laid off yesterday so now I am footloose! Even thought about sitting in a class again if that would really help me focus on the cert and find more contacts. Or if anyone knows anything about projects being done for not for profit companies I would gladly volunteer to get more java exp.
Thanks,
Jeff

I can get one Java Magazine and wonder which one others would pick. I am a relative beginner with some experience and would like to keep my feet wet and learn some new things as I do some programming in another language for a bit.
