New SpeechMatic MultiAdapter USB Soundcard Can Potentially Increase Your Speech Recognition Accuracy

Have you noticed how the blue bar bounces up and down as you are running the Dragon Audio Check? Our voices never maintain a steady volume level so Dragon has to make an educated guess which means that potentially, our accuracy is never quite as good as it could be.

From a speech recognition point of view, USB soundcards have remained virtually unchanged since their inception in the late 90s. While some of the latest models include pretty blinking LED lights, low noise floors and high fidelity output, none of these innovations are relevant to speech recognition and that’s why, until now, we have been hesitant to publish a USB soundcard review. Fortunately, that’s all changed.

We have always endorsed the use of external USB soundcards or USB microphones but as of today, the only USB soundcard we will be recommending is the SpeechMatic MultiAdapter (due August 22, 2013) because it not only includes auto gain control but additionally includes auto EQ to compensate for vocal tonal changes that occur when speaking at lower or higher volume levels or extending or shortening the microphone distance. Besides being the only USB soundcard to include auto volume/EQ, it will also features global broadband noise filtering, a de-clicking algorithm (to block non-words such as clearing your throat) and NaturallySpeaking 11/12 algorithms impregnated onto an integrated circuit board. This new USB soundcard, which we have been testing for the last 6 months, is introducing 6 new technologies which you’ll find covered in our KnowBrainer Soundcard Face-Off ~ http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/Battle_of_the_USB_Soundcards.pdf but the bottom line is we found the new SpeechMatic MultiAdapter increased our speech recognition accuracy by approximately 1% over other soundcards. 1% may not sound like much until you realize that raising your accuracy from 96% to 97% translates to more than 25% fewer misrecognitions. To demonstrate this new technology, we were able to place our headset, approximately 12 inches away on our desktop, and continue dictating. Although our accuracy dropped a bit, we know of few other headset microphones that could be used from 12 inches away.

If you have a few minutes and are interested in DNS feel free to read our Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Review http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/DNS_10_Review.pdf . I think you will find it a good read. As a vendor, you might feel that we would be tempted to push the good points but we also made a point of focusing on what we considered to be Ver. 10 shortcomings.

If any questions arise ask them here on this thread or on the KnowBrainer Speech Recognition Forum http://www.knowbrainer.com/PubForum/ .

We have just concluded our in-house testing of the new Senneheiser VMX Office http://www.knowbrainer.com/ShopOnline/index.cfm/product/158_23/sennheiser-vmx-office-microphone.cfm combination Bluetooth and 1.9 GHz wireless microphone. Although we found this microphone to be a little less accurate than some reviewers, we tend to agree with most of the positive reviews on our forum. Click VMX Office Review http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/VMX_Office_Review.pdf to see our latest findings.

There may be some Dragon NaturallySpeaking interest in this community so I thought Id drop of this information to hopefully resolve some of your questions. If allowed I would very much like to stop by every now and then and answer any other questions that come up on this forum regarding speech recognition.

1. If youre using Vista you should have 3-4 GB of RAM. For an XP platform you will require 2 GB of RAM. The software will run on less but wont be very effective.

NOTE: If you're looking at buying a new computer to use with DNS I would consider looking at ASUS computers. Regardless of what system you by, you want a Core2 Duo 2 GHz or better CPU speed, 2 GB of RAM an XP platform (3 GB on Vista), 2 - 4 MB of L2 cache, a SATA hard drive of at least 100 GB although you may be able get 160 for about the same price. Your soundcard will be important so go with a mid to high end Soundblaster.

2. Unless youre using a Soundblaster card dont depend on the integrated soundcard in your computer as it is probably poorly shielded. Get yourself an external soundcard (USB Pod) and use a USB port on the back of your computer as opposed to the front.

3. Here is a copy of the manual we wrote for version 9. Its designed as version 9.5 upgrade manual but if you are a new user to DNS you can download a full copy manual at KnowBrainer.com. KnowBrainer Manual http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/KnowBrainer_Manual.PDF

4. Here is a copy of the KnowBrainer Quick Tips which is PDF help file for day to day troubleshooting that is updated all the time from questions answered on our forum. http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/NatPro_Quick_Tips.pdf

5. Here is a copy of our DNS 9 Review. I think youll find it pretty thorough. http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/v9_review.pdf

6. For research feel free to use the KnowBrainer Speech Recognition Forum as it is by far the largest and most active of its kind. http://www.knowbrainer.com/PubForum/

7. I know there are quite a few users of NaturallySpeaking version 9 who dont know about the Free upgrade to 9.5. Then there are some that do but dont have time to find a path to it and worry about difficulty installing it. You should always use the most updated software especially when its free. Version 9.5 consolidates the code between version 9 and 9.1 and contains a few minor tweaks. The main purpose for the upgrade is for Vista compatibility. Here is your path and instructions - DNS 9.5 Update Guide http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/DNS_9.5_Update.pdf
