Following up on the above, see what happens to this window if I include a string like the one below:

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

This is precisely what I'm trying to avoid.
Thanks,
-Arvind

How can I limit the width of a table column to be smaller than it's contents? For example, I have a table column with the following value:

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

(Notice there are no spaces in the string above) But I want it's width to be just 20 pixels, and when displayed, I'd like the string above to be chopped off and maybe displayed as such:

wwwwwwwwwwww...

I know that getting the "..." might mean custom code; however, is there a standard HTML way of limiting width to be smaller than the actual contents?

Along the same lines, if I have the same text in the body of page and I make the window narrow, is there any way to make the text auto wrap such that the horizontal scroll bar does not appear in the window?

Thanks,
-Arvind
How can I change the cursor to a "hand" when the mouse is moved over a table in Netscape? I've tried setting the "style.cursor" attribute to "hand" on onMouseOver for the table.
It works in IE; however, it does not work in Netscape.
Thanks,

Actually, what I was trying to do was to clear the value such that no file is uploaded when the user clicks on a checkbox.
I found another way to prevent the file upload - and that is to disable the file input field.
A follow up question:
How can I perform error checks on the filename specified by the user. I want to see if the file exists on the user's file system and present an error dialog if there are problems.
Thanks,
-Arvind
I have an HTML page that allows users to upload files via the <input type="file" /> field. I have some Javascript in which I want to change the value of this file input field.
I tried ...
form.filefield.value = "new value";
however, it does not work ... because the value property of the file input field is READ-ONLY. Does anyone know of any way to change the value of this field in Javascript?
Thanks,
-Arvind
What's the HTML code for creating a page that contains a header, side nav, main body, and footer using tables. The specs are ...
1. The table should resize automatically to fit the whole window (even through resizes)
2. The header and footer "rows" should be compact and be tall enough to perfectly fit the contents
3. The side nav should take 25% of the width of the window
4. The main body should take 75% of the width of the window, but the height should stretch to take the remaining height of the window (basically main_body_height = window_height - footer_height - header_height)
I've come up with a solution; however, it involves specifying a height for the <tr> tag. And in all HTML references I've seen, <tr> DOES NOT support the height property (?)
Any thoughts?

What's the location of the DEFAULT "web.xml" of the default web container in the JBoss 3.0.x bundled with Tomcat 4.1.x?
It should be under $jboss_install/server/default/deploy/jbossweb-tomcat41.sar/WEB-INF; however, I don't even see the "jbossweb-tomcat41.sar" directory.
What I want to do is set the default error-page property for the entire web container for various error-codes; that way I can show custom error pages for various HTTP error codes.
Thanks,
-Arvind

Thanks for the quick response and suggestion, but ...
I have JBoss 3.0.x (bundled with Tomcat 4.1.x), and ...
Under the deploy directory, there is a "http-invoker.sar" directory under which there is a "invoker.war" directory. And then in that directory there is a WEB-INF directory with a web.xml file. I added the error-page declaration there; however, it didn't work.
Any thoughts?

Does anyone know how to provide JBoss with a custom error page to display for various HTTP error codes? HTTP 403 in particular.
I know that you can specify (in web.xml) the following for each web application deployed under JBoss ...
<error-page>
<error-code>403</error-code>
<location>error403.html</location>
</error-page>
But that limits the error handling to that web application. I want to configure this at a server level.
Thanks,

I had forgot about this question that I had posted here. Just got an email about a reply and thought I'd investigate.
Anyway, just wanted to thank everyone for their help here. I am certified now! I got a 145/155. I wasn't able to get to the point break-up though. I fininshed the assignment last year and took the test late last year. The results came back fairly quickly. I'm not that thrilled about the grade since I had put in a lot of time and effort - but I guess I should happy that I passed. The essay exam was a piece of cake - there is no need to study unless you didn't write your design choices document.
Well, thanks to everyone again!! Good luck to everyone that is currently going for their certification.
Thanks a lot guys ... the sample questions helped. As both of you said, the exam is basically a verfication process. It verifies that you are the author of the program that you submitted. A couple of the questions concerning RMI and record-locking required a description; whereas the other three were just one sentence (even one word) answers.
Now, starts the long wait until the results are posted. I am a bit nervous about the results. I just hope I get the results back before Christmas - and I hope I pass!
Thanks again ....

At some point, I remember to have seen some sample questions for the SCJD Developer Exam on Sun's website. I cannot find them now. I think there were some sample questions along with some answers. I know that some of my peers used this to study for the exam. Does anyone know what happened to this list of sample questions? Does anyone have this information saved off somewhere? I'm scheduled to take the exam this Friday.
Thanks.
Thanks for the help and clarification guys. I'll look into the Connection object as a way of tracking clients. For now, I think I'll continue with my client ID approach and work on the client GUI program for a while.
Had a question about the client. The requirements state that we should using Swing for the GUI. Does this mean that we SHOULD NOT use any of the AWT constructs. For example, I'm designing a dialog using JDialog and I'd like to set its layout manager to GridBagLayout - but GridBagLayout is an AWT construct. Would I be wrong to use it? Also, I'm making use of several AWT event listeners - am I also banned from using them?
In the future, when I have similar questions how I can determine if I can use a certain class or not? Thanks.
Thanks for your reply Matthew, my comments are below.

Design a "Connection" object that implements Remote. This object also implements your data interface. Now, you have a proxy object that serves two purposes - a) it allows remote connectivity to your data object, and b) it allows you to do some clever things BEFORE and AFTER you pass the request on to your data class. Specifically, now you can register that a given thread is working on behalf of a given connection in some sort of "thread connection registry" that you will implement. So, in your connection class:

You've got a good idea there. Actually, I've read similar solutions in other topics in this forum; however, I've also read that RMI does not guarantee that the same thread will be used from one method invocation to the next. Thus, for example, a client could be running in Thread A when calling lock and the same client could be running in Thread B when calling unlock and this would cause an inconsistency. Don't know if I'm making sense - please do reply if you get a chance.
Thanks.
