Hello,

I am just moving a project from Netbeans to Eclipse (both MacOS 10.6). The project worked fine with Netbeans 6.8. I'm using the MySQL JDBC driver, which is placed in the /Library/Java/Extensions/ folder - just where it should be.

When I start my project, Eclipse (3.4) gives an error message:

It looks like the MySQL driver is giving this problem. DOes anyone have an idea why this is, and what could be the way out?

Many thanks in advance

Ray

Thanks Jeanne,

your answer threw light in the right direction!

MySQL seems to need the getCatalogs method to get it going. Here is the basic code that worked fine for me:

Hello,

I wonder how to get all databases from a MySQL system? I'm used to get a normal connection, metadata etc. But I can only connect to predefined database in the connection parameters.

Help is much appreciated

Hello Satish,

great that you take the time answering questions here! Great to have a book based on the actual version of Flex, that takes care of Java programmers questions.

So here is one from me: how do you see the future of Swing in the context of having beautiful frontends like Flex? I know, they are not 100% comparable, but in practice I think many developers will think as those as 'the' 2 alternatives, especially comparing the Air framework with Swing. Swing has a huge, mighty API, but I often have the feeling that it doesn't get the attention it could have get, since it is _that_ huge (and complex sometimes).

Sorry if this is a very basic question (I am currently preparing for SCJP): is it possible to build MVC apps with the combo Java/Flex nicely? I guess the answer is yes, since would be the view anyway, but how can I pretend the connection is been made?

What time would you expect would I need, if I have basic Java knowledge (SCJP) and no Flex knowledge to get ready for starting your book? Is it more like 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 months, if I would spend 2 ours of preparation everyday (well, I have seen the links in your other answer, but an estimation would be helpful).

Many thanks in advance

Hello,

I'm quite puzzled about this code:

Given:

It returns "86foo". But I wonder why? The return type of the foo method is String. I would guess that as soon as a String is involved as operand, all "+" operators would work as concatenation operators. Why not?

Thanks for your help

Many thanks for your quick reply - got it!

Hello,

I'm just reading the SCJP book of K&B, and on page 101 there is an example regarding polymorphism.

All these should work:

Player Piece implements Animatable and extends GameShape. Therefor the player object can be referenced to an instance of Object, PlayerPiece and GameShape. No problems with that.
But for the interface Animatable: wouldn't that have to be casted, like this:

Thanks for your thoughts

Ray

Brilliant, thanks. This is a great place!

Hello,

int i = 45678;
int j = ~i;
System.out.println(j);

results in the output -45679

Why is this. What is this operator called.

Many thanks in advance.

It's just for practice! What technique would you recommend to get a similar result (remote methods and passing objects)?

BTW: I guess the best solution for webhosting would be a virtual server, since there I have full control over the ports etc.

Best

Hello,

I'm new to RMI, I just went through a few tutorials.
Now I wonder, what is the best way to get my RMI server on a hosted webserver? I guess that I need an application server like Glassfish to do so on my webspace. Bur how do I start my server there? Are there recommendations which hosting provider supports RMI? Or would it be better to get a virtual server for this?

Questions over question. I would be glad, if anyone could push me to the right direction.

Thanks in advance
