Hello Nad,

I understand your requirement and as suggested by Ben, AJAX would be the best solution. But, if you do not want to use AJAX, then why not try to sell the concept of Lookup screen?

i.e. instaead of dropdowns, provide the user with a text box. Let user enter some value, or the initial alphabet of the value he/she is looking to select. Provide a link next to your text box as 'Look up' and then based on the value entered by user, retrieve the results in a new screen. User can then select a value from the displayed ones.

This will serve 2 things,
1. user gets refined data - he/she can search
2. you do not need to populate all the drop downs
Hello Saphalya,

You can achieve this by using the Shell API.

Hello,
I have 2 different sessions of my web application running on the same machine. But, if I open a screen with same name from both the instances, then the window opened first gets refreshed.
I beleive this is a default feature by MS Internet Explorer.
Is there any way, I can make IE 2 open diffreent windows with same name ?
Many thanks in adavnce.

How do I use Oracle Report server 6i with OC4J ??
We have installed oracle report server 6i. We are able to view any reports from the same machine the report server is installed. If we want to view the reports from other machines which have oc4j running, how do we do it ? what are the key steps to configure ?
Is it a necessity to have OC4j on the machine where report server is running ?

Hello,
I have installed Tomcat v4.0.6.
The server starts successfully with no error messages. But, whenever I try to access any JSPs or servlets, it gives me a error on the browser,
Apache Tomcat/4.0.6 - HTTP Status 503 - This application is not currently available.
I even tried opening some example JSPs, but it does give the same error.
Can any one suggest me any solution for this problem ??

With reference to Hanumant Deshmukh's book,
Chapter 6, Section 6.4.1
Behaviour od servlet context in distributed environment
Its' mentioned that

A servlet container is not required to propogate ServletContextEvents and ServletContextAttributeEvents to differnet JVMs. This means that changes to the ServletContext in one JVM may not trigger a method call on a ServletContextListener or a ServletContextAttributeListener in another JVM.

Now the question asked in the quizlet right after section 6.4.1,

Your web application user ServletContextListener to page support personnel whenever it goes down. What would be the impact on this functionality if the ewb application were deployed is a distributed environment ?

The answer given is that, there won't be any effect.
But the statement made, kind of contradicts with the answer given to this question.
Can any one clear my doubt !!!
Thanks,

IT's said that

every web application has exactly one instance of ServeltContext (assuming that the servlet container is not distributed across multiple JVMs).

Does it mean that if servlet container is distributed across multiple JVMs, then there will be more that 1 instance of ServletContext ??
If yes, is it mandatory ??
Can any 1 please explain me this ??
Thanks Veena,
I tried the onbeforeunload event, and it works.
I have found a solution on which I can stop the unload event, by returning false to onbeforeunload.

But the problem here is that, IE itselfs prompts a message saying,

Are you sure you want to navigate from the current page.

Is there any way to disable this message from IE ?

Hello,
I want to display a confirm message 'Are you sure u want to quit ?', when user presses the [X] button. But, the onUnload() closes the window first and then displays the message.
Is there any way to display the message first and close the window ???

Hello folks,
I am working on a project wherein recrod level locking is been already implemented using a Hash Table. To unlock the particular record, the onUnload() method is used. (I don't have any idea why HashTable...)Due to some reasons, this onUnload() solution has become very unreliable. So, I'm to provide a better solution for this.
Solutions though of so far...
1. When user logs out clear the entries for that particular user from HashTable.
2. Depend on session. Session times out.... clear the hashtable.
If anybody with any other solution please let me know...

Hello Vasu,
As per my understanding, the setAttribute method is used to share the data or variables amongst other servlets or JSPs. The initializing parameters however are those whose values need not be changed often, or will remain constant such as a ODBC connection string and will be meant for a particular Servlet.
The initializing parameters have a life span depending upon the Containers used for sharing, but the lifespan of initializing parameters will
depend upon the lifespan of the Servlet.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
