Hey guys

I came across the following link while studying for SCWCD 1.5, Thought should share it with you lot.

I agree with Maneesh and Rob.

Hand coding not only helps you know what exactly you are doing, it also helps improve your knowledge

Ofcourse there's a misprint in the book, It's time you should compile the java program in your brain while you are writing it.

I mean, look at the code, the problem is right there, in front of your eyes.

Hint: Apply your basic, very very very basic java sense.

Make sure you are updating the progress bar in event dispatch thread.

OR

Try using ProgressMonitor

While I populate the values for the first time it takes roughly 8 seconds, but during subsequent times it takes only 2 seconds

Are you making the connection to the DB, or running any extra code when you hit the tab button for the first time?

This is where i think the problem is

A) Logic:
1) You don't need MouseListener, you need ActionListener: one for each button (Next and Previous)

2) Don't loop through the collection, get the next or previous result strnig, based on what button was clicked, and set it in the txtresult

B) Optimization
1) No need of s,s1,s2,s3,s4, string and str variables, you can concatenate the result in the argument to v.addElement() itself.
2) There in no need to convert Vector into array, you can use the vector itself.
3) If you are using 1.5 or higher, go for generics, you can avoid the toString() call.
