There is something I don't understand about the below javascript. I executed the following code from Secrets of the Javascript Ninjas:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>Listing 5.12</title>
<script type="text/javascript" src="../scripts/assert.js"></script>
<link href="../styles/assert.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
</head>
<body>
<script type="text/javascript">

Function.prototype.partial = function() {
var fn = this, args = Array.prototype.slice.call(arguments);
return function() {
var arg = 0;
for (var i = 0; i < args.length && arg < arguments.length; i++) {
if (args[i] === undefined) {
args[i] = arguments[arg++];
}
}
return fn.apply(this, args);
};
};

Math.maxAbove500 = Math.max.partial(500);

assert(Math.maxAbove500(3,4,1,6) == 500, "Max of 500, 3, 4, 1, 6 is 500"); //#4
assert(Math.maxAbove500(3,4,11223,1,6) == 11223, "Max of 500, 3, 4, 11223, 1, 6 is 11223"); //#4

</script>
</body>
</html>

When it runs, the first assert works and returns true, but when the second assert runs it return false. It seems it should return true also since 11223 is the max in the array. Is there something I don't understand about this function or is there some sort of error? I'm running this in Chrome ver. 31.0.1650.57.
Beginner question here. I think this is a Hibernate question but possibly it is for JSF. Anyway, I'm using JSF and Hibernate and I have 2 classes -

public Class Appointment
DateTime date;
Client client;

public Class Client
String name;
List<Appointments> appointments;

As above, each client can have many appointments but an Appointment can have only one client - a one to many relationship.
The problem is that when creating an appointment (which has only one client) I want the user to be able to select the client from a dropdown list of clients.
One way I can see doing that is if I change the above to a Many to Many relationship so that the when I am creating a new appointment I use the list of clients to populate the drop down list.

Is there a standard way of doing this?

Possibly I should have a getAllClients method in my AppointsBusinessObject and use that to populate the dropdown list?

Thanks, Dave
Okay, I figured out a way to do it - Netbeans only I'm afraid. To get a reference to a node in another class (TopComponent) use:

Node[] n = TopComponent.getRegistry().getCurrentNodes();

and then, for example, its:

String x = n[0].getDisplayName();

if you want the nodes display name.

Thanks, very good point. Unfortunately I'm not quite sure how I'm going to be able to do this. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the swift responses. The code is below (note: I'm using NetBeans):

//Class that I wish to get information from.
public final class PortfoliosTopComponent extends TopComponent implements ExplorerManager.Provider, LookupListener {

private static transient ExplorerManager em = new ExplorerManager();
private Lookup.Result<PortfolioNode> result = null;
private static PortfolioNode portfolionode = null;
private String portfolioname;
.
.
.
public String getPortfolioName() { //I want to retrieve this value
return portfolioname;
}
}

//Action class that is attempting to get the info
public class AddStockAction extends AbstractAction {

public AddStockAction() {
super("Add Stock");
}

@Override
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {

String result = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter name:");
if (result == null) {
return;
}
xmlManager xm = new xmlManager();
if (xm.addStock(PortfoliosTopComponent.getPortfolioName(), result)) //Right here is where I get the message:
PortfoliosTopComponent.refreshNode(); //non-static method getPortfolioName cannot be referenced from a static context

}

}

I'm sure there's a simple explanation for this but I can't figure it out. I extended AbstractAction and implemented actionPerformed. I want to reference a method in another, clearly non-static, class. However I'm getting a non-static method cannot be referenced from a static context message in the actionPerformed method. I checked AbstractAction and the ActionListener interface and nothing there was static. Can someone please explain why I'm getting this message?

Thanks Dave

Do you know of any example code?

I'm looking for a (relatively) simple example of creating a menu (several JMenus each with a couple of JMenuItems) from XML. Is this fairly common in java? I would have assumed so but my google searches are only turning up dhtml examples. If anyone can provide a demo or an explanation of a way to do it (or a reason not to do it), I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

I'm new to hibernate/spring/mysql and getting the following error which I can't debug. The user is created and granted all privileges. Anyone have any insight? Thanks!

Sorry, I simply meant that the examples weren't (to me, anyway) entirely clear and I made some assumptions.

Thanks for replying. Okay, I got the image to display by this:

<img border="0" src="http://ichart.finance.yahoo.com/t?s=IBM" />

Obviously I misunderstood the c:import tag! However, the code samples I saw all seemed to use just the <c:import> in that fashion.

I was using this code from tutorialspoint.com

<%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>
<html>
<head>
<title><c:import> Tag Example</title>
</head>
<body>
<c:import var="data" url="http://www.tutorialspoint.com"/>
<c:out value="${data}"/>
</body>
</html>

So, if I want to include the whole web page in my jsp, what's the best way?

Thanks

JSP

I'm trying to use jstl c:import and I'm just getting junk. I just tried:

<c:import var="data" url="http://ichart.finance.yahoo.com/t?s=IBM" />
<c:out value="${data}"/>

the taglib is:

<%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" %>

I've also tried without the var="data" and the c:out and all I get is junk displaying, not an image. And, no, there are no compile or runtime errors. Below is what I'm getting:

‰PNG  IHDR¾_Ùêí”IDATxœí{PSWþÀ¿÷&!! y€€(ëQéÏW·Nm;ÝŸµÕníXmíŽÝ®vwqµŒÔêhÛµÓí¿µS]GeZ§Zº[§ÀŠbiP ¼ ä!Â#!{ z¹^D„,÷3LæžsÏ9÷{“/ßó½ç|ϹI’ÀÂrÿp©£‚‚‚eË–uwwëõúeË–ŽãÁÁÁï¾ûîk¯½†ÎFFFšL¦ŽŽ¥R ÝÝÝR©tªD ÍÍÍF£ÇqˆŽŽV©TŒF£1**Šž388xõêÕG y%[[[ëëë1 KHH u{F„Ýn×ëõ.— Çñ9sæðùü±45:/^‹ÅèX Ì™3‡žér¹d2™V«-))€îîn™Liii㸮§F£Q,òÉ';wî|å•WPfWWWCCCYY™@ °Ùl~y/c2™ÌfsZZŽãA”——ã8 A/sóæMºê˜Í檪*‡ÃAåÔÕÕ-^¼˜ ˆââb·¿÷È*ˆššµZ ÖÖÖV[[›’’rϦî

Why isn't the image displaying?

Could you explain in a little more detail how you did it? I'm thinking maybe I should do the same.

Thanks
Dave
Sorry about that, I phrased the post poorly. I guess I'm just curious about how other people handled the problem of setting up their application to deal with the issues of using different databases. I know someone (you?) did a dao factory pattern.

Dave

Does anyone have a good suggestion on how to set up the code to efficiently change from the project database to a commercial database? Right now I have a business services layer that has a data layer object reference and simply calls the data layer methods and passes in the data. For example: datalayer.updateData(recordNum, lockCookie);

This works, but I'm sure there must be a better way to setup the application to switch from the homegrown db to a commercial app. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Dave
