yes.... except that i dont want to generate a new html page ... just use the existing page, fill in the data and have the submit button clicked automatically by the servlet.

hi. i am not sure if this is the place for this query but here it is anyway:
i have a simple html form which allows employees to enter their code and enter a date on which they want a casual leave.
i now want to write code which would allow me to fill in the the code and the date from a db table automatically into my html page and the code should also click the submit button.
thanks in advance

one reason i want to do java is becasue i want to.... i feel it gives me more options etc...
i have tried vb but its not as good as java....
even thought the first launch has already taken place in vb of what i want to do...
u see...i am in pakistan...and here the internet costs are high...so launcing a web based app offline makes more sense ... this way i can load the program on to the web when it becomes cost effective
i also save on costs as java is all free...
for example....if i want to use a nice background in vb ... it slows down the system to an extent that its a no go
also i want to get out of vb....i have noticed that deploying MS systems is mor expensive and THEIR products work better on their tools

mike.....i swithced to java web server and its working now...

thanks a lot for ur help ... switching was one heluuva load off.. .. i am really gratefull for ur follow up!

in case u wonderred why i am going thru all this trouble to do the following:
* i want to make a small database app for kids from grade 5-8
* and i want it browser based rather than a java application
* and i want it an OFF-LINE BROWSER APPLICATION ...please dont ask the reasons
* so i gather that in order to distribute the app, i will have to bundle the web server too?
* in order to make the app,, what shd i use?...servlets? jsp? or both...... i am currently not familiar with any one of these ... basically i am a fortran/vb/oracle/sql database programmer
one reason i am chossing the browser is because a java app is slow anyway .. so why not use the browser to add fun stuff like animation etc..
is this a workable idea?

my tomcat is finally running..BUT
how do i know this?.....a DOS java screen opens up which shows all the requests being made from the browser to the server.. the output is as follows:
-------------------
Starting service Tomcat-Apache
Apache Tomcat/4.0
StandardServer.await: Invalid command 'GET / HTTP/1.1' received
-------------------
in the output above lies yet my problem ...
every request i make, the tomcat gives me the last line as error
the above error is when i just type in : http://localhost:8080
no show ... nada ... i get the error and no page gets displayed.
tomcat says the the folder \webapps is the folder that is mapped as the virtual folder ... and the sub folder .\root has an index.htm file which says that if i can view this page i know tomcat is running...
i have also tried http://localhost:8080/webapps/root/index.htm
nope..nien .. niet ... the error i get is:
-----------------------
StandardServer.await: Invalid command 'GET /webapps/root HTTP/1.1' received
StandardServer.await: Invalid command 'GET /webapps/root/index.htm HTTP/1.1' rec
eived
-----------------------
stuck again ....

hello there mike ... i think u helped me out and i am just a few strokes shy of making tomcat run.....
the following is the batch file startup
the thing to note is the last line whihc is reproduced below:
***********************
Cannot find file 'c:\jdk1.2.2\bin\bin\java' (or one of its components).
***********************
WHERE IS MY MACHINE GETTING THE bin\bin path???...i have checked everywhere...i am not specifying this path anywhere...
-----------------------
C:\Program Files\Apache Tomcat 4\bin>
C:\Program Files\Apache Tomcat 4\bin>set _CATALINA_HOME=c:\Progra~1\Apache~1
C:\Program Files\Apache Tomcat 4\bin>if not "c:\Progra~1\Apache~1" == "" goto go
tCatalinaHome
C:\Program Files\Apache Tomcat 4\bin>"c:\Progra~1\Apache~1\bin\catalina" start
Using CATALINA_BASE: c:\Progra~1\Apache~1
Using CATALINA_HOME: c:\Progra~1\Apache~1
Using CLASSPATH: c:\Progra~1\Apache~1\bin\bootstrap.jar;c:\jdk1.2.2\bin\lib\
tools.jar
Using JAVA_HOME: c:\jdk1.2.2\bin
Cannot find file 'c:\jdk1.2.2\bin\bin\java' (or one of its components).
Check to ensure the path and filename are correct and that all
required libraries are available.
