Hi ,

I have successfully taken heap dump in Sun JDK 1.6 (Windows) through HotSpotMXBean and by using jmap . Now , I have to do the same thing in JDK 1.5(windows).

Now the problem is that , in JDK 1.5 (windows) there is no jmap , neither does it support HotSpotMXBean. So , can you guide me how I can take heap dump of a whole JVM in 1.5.

Thanks in advance.

Paul Clapham wrote:This might be obvious... but if you want to write code which reads and interprets that file, you need to know its format. So your next step is to find that out.

Also, presumably "jhat" is a program, so it's reading the file "through code". However if you don't want to use that code, then yes, you need to write your own.

Yeah , I know that. I just wanted to know the format of binary file , as even after exhaustive googling I could not find anything in this regard.

I can successfully generate take heap snapshot and save it as a binary file.
Now , the problem is as I don't know the structure / format of binary heap file , I can not read it from program. I know , I can do it using jhat. But I want to do it through code.

Any pointers in this regard ?

Thanks in advance..

Ok, the problem has been resolved..

I was damn foolish to rs.getString the BINARYFILE. Later , I changed to rs.getBytes , and everything worked fine.

But, now I have one problem:

How can I print the content of the .doc file on the browser ?

I mean , what MIME type I have to use ?

I have tried using "application/msword" , but it is prompting to download rather than printing the content .

the "text/plain" and "text/html" are printing unwanted ascii characters and that looks horrible

Can you please help me ?
