Thanks Ulf and Please accept my sincere apologies.

We actually can't run the queries ahead of time as the input passed to the query is unpredictable.

Hello Dittmer,
The problem now is not processing time but when and how to process that time taking query. If there are a lot of concurrent requests, and all of them are being processed in parallel, then we fear that DB will crash. If, on the other hand, the requests are processed sequentially, we can omit that problem.

Hello Karthik,
Thanks for the quick reply

The query has been optimised to the best extent by the DB experts. The task at hand now is to find a way on when to execute that query.

Hello,
For one of the requirements in our project we need to access a DB table having huge data and then do some calculations based on the passed criteria to the stored proc. Such kind of query is taking huge time and consuming a lot of CPU as well. We though of some alternative approaches as follows :
1. Scheduler (Schedule such kind of queries to run in non-peak hours)
2. JMS Queue (Queue up the requests so that many concurrent requests do not create problem)

Scheduler has a con that it will change the user experience as the user will be getting the result for his criteria only on the next day of querying it. As far as JMS is concerned, we are not sure if it will be of use for such kind of scenario.

Could you please comment on this? Could you please suggest some alternative approach also?

Thanks

If you have to choose between company A(Quality of Work, Working with more skilled people, Small Company thus job insecurity, working at a location with lesser career opportunities) and company B (Brand name, job security, more probable onsite opportunities, not so sure about getting the work you are really interested in, working at a location with better career opportunities) what would you choose?

I was going through Spring Web Flow when I stopped and thought I would get this question of mine answered before I continue. Can anyone please tell me how efficient is Spring Web Flow and how much is it really used in real time projects?

Hi all, Our application is based on spring and we are using clustered environment (2 servers) for our application with jndi as datasource (org.springframework.jndi.JndiObjectFactoryBean). For scheduling jobs, quartz is being used. But deleting the job is not deleting the job from both the servers. The job remains active and scheduled on the other server. I googled and found out the we could use isClustered property in quartzProperties for the purpose but it's mentioned that it can be used only for JDBC. Could anyone please tell me how to sort out the problem? I tried using following in applicationContext but it isn't helping :

Thanks for the reply James. You are right that count(*) will give me total number of records. But I am not able to figure out how to use that value in a condition for choosing between queries.
I want to get data from a table based on certain condition. For eg, if table1 is not empty then get complete data from table2 else get the data from table2 for which created_dt (let's say it's one of the columns in table2) is today's date. It's like following :

if(condition)
then execute query1
else
execute query2

Is there any way to achieve this in SQL?
I guess IST is not a valid TZR. Problem was solved using the following :
Could anyone please tell me what's wrong the the following query because of which I am getting "Date Format not recognized" error :
I do need to use it. I am actually reading a file which can be of either xls or xlsx format. We have one API each for rendering xls and xlsx file. For xls it's HSSFWorkbook and for xlsx it's XSSFWorkbook. Both these classes have methods with same names in it. So if I can have a synonym type, I can use it to declare either HSSFWorkbook or XSSFWorkbook variable as the case may be.

I was wondering if we have any way to declare a variable with our own name. For example,

Please don't say to extend the class and then declare because that won't be same (for example, private variables will be missing).

Thanks for the quick response Ulf I am using "org.apache.poi.xssf.usermodel.XSSFWorkbook" to read "xlsx" format and "org.apache.poi.hssf.usermodel.HSSFWorkbook" to read "xls" format. None of the APIs can be used to read both the formats. I might be missing the proper usage of the APIs to achieve the task. Could you please tell me how to do it exactly?

Is there way to read .xls and .xlsx using same set of APIs? If yes, then how?
