Position Summary

ESL UK are the project lead, as part of a 6 business consortium, for an ambitious government funded research & development project which has been commissioned through the Industry Strategy Challenge Fund. The consortium is  codenamed Weavr and consists of; ESL UK, REWIND, University of York, Focal Point VR, Dock10 & Cybula. The consortium has been awarded £4m in funding to create a framework for personalised AI powered immersive experiences for audiences in esports.  More information can be found at http://weavr.tv.

The role will be responsible for project management internally & across the Weavr consortium members to deliver the project on time & to budget. You will liaise across a diverse set of organisations to ensure their work packages are being delivered into the overall project scope. You will be responsible for managing all personnel time forecast & tracking for the ESL UK team working on Weavr and the ESL UK budgeting elements.

You will be required to provide weekly updates to the consortium as a whole of the project progress & be present at the quarterly meetings with the government liaison officer.

You will report directly to the MD & COO, both of whom will be spending ~25% of their time on the project. You will be part of a team of 13 within ESL UK working on the project, with further members of ESL UK staff contributing during key milestones such as demonstrations at ESL events.

The role requires someone with an entrepreneurial spirit with an interest in joining a project at a key early stage. With plenty of opportunity to grow into the business line as it expands post the 2 year project deliverables.

Your future responsibilities:

- Coordinate and facilitate all consortium member communication, including organising regular meetings.
- Manage all consortium member activities and work packages in order to meet project goals.
- Measure consortium members deliverables against the project plan.
- Regular work package member meetings, note taking & dissemination of information.
- Manage all ESL UK project deliverables using project management software and best practice methodologies.
- Regularly updates and liaison with executive management on the status of the project.
- Work closely with the project’s Lead Developer who also sits within ESL UK.
- Manage internal staff resources working on the project, ensure timesheets are up to date and kept for reporting purposes.
- Liaise with the project bookkeeper and maintain the budget.

As a Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and development of a submarine command system. You will be taking the lead in managing requirements, creating designs, and overseeing suppliers.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on a major, high-profile engineering programme, enabling you to interact with a number of internal and external stakeholders including the Ministry of Defence. This role also offers flexible working, an annual bonus incentive scheme, the potential for paid overtime (dependent on business requirements), and support towards chartership, if required.

Your main responsibilities as a Systems Engineer will involve:

Overseeing the development of submarine system technology updates and design improvements

Leading the management of the system requirements through DOORS software, and related assurance activities

Supporting Project Management teams and BAE Technical Authorities to deliver an updated design and implement planning processes

Liaising with internal and external customers to ensure system Requirements are adequately supported through planning, installation, integration and trial activities

Ensuring requirements are implemented and qualification evidence is generated either by the supplier or on their behalf

Providing realistic programme status, identify problem areas and implement agreed recovery plans

Your skills and qualifications as a Systems Engineer:

Essential:

Experience in one or more of the following areas:

· Systems engineering

· System design

· Validation/ verification

Experience gained from a complex engineering environment (such as defence, maritime, aerospace, oil and gas, nuclear, automotive etc.)

Would you like the chance to play a crucial role in supporting the development of our cutting-edge submarine programmes? We are looking for a Senior Engineer with IT skills and systems engineering knowledge to join us at our site in Ash Vale, Surrey.

As a Senior Engineer, you will be breaking down requirements, designing documented solutions, and developing the product ready for test activities. This is a long term, large scale engineering project, offering you the chance to work on novel equipment and provide solutions to unique challenges, such as those posed in a submarine environment.

In this role you will be conducting systems engineering activities through the engineering life cycle. You’ll be responding to customer requirements, architecting the solution, and working closely with subcontractors to provide a design solution that meets the needs of a submarines combat system.


Your main responsibilities as Senior Engineer - Test Equipment will involve:

Producing system specifications derived from technical requirements, decomposing these into system and subsystem design descriptions, and software/hardware specifications

Developing and testing software components on hardware modules ensuring that both functional and non‑functional requirements have been met prior to submission into formal test

Preparing and presenting design review material at product phase reviews to allow progression through the engineering lifecycle

Investigating and addressing technical issues by modifying existing designs or correcting defects, accurately tracking and maintaining all change records

Ensuring traceability of requirements to their parent system-level requirements and aiding the test team to produce sufficient quality control evidence to allow the production of the system’s certificate of design

Technical input to the project management team to produce robust cost estimates, technical risk assessment and reduction


While not limited to the below, ideally we would like you to have some of the following skills and experience:

Experience of working within an engineering life cycle framework

Experience in producing system specifications from technical requirements and implementing designs from specifications

Programming knowledge (eg C++, C#) on Windows/Linux

Programming for equipment and device control


Experience in the following would also be advantageous.

Experience of scripting (e.g. PowerShell, Bash) and/ or experience with UML modelling

Windows 10 configuration and lockdown

Familiarisation with virtualisation, networking and storage

• Ability to create and maintain the data pipeline for AI driven solutions. This will be including scripting bespoke solutions for Scalable Big Data Platform and Advanced Real Time linked Data Acquisition
• Experience is using Big Data tools including Apache- Hive, PySpark, Ambari, Oozie and NoSQL technologies (Hbase or Mongodb)
• You must be a skilled Data and Software development practitioner with the ability to code software solutions using: Python, R, Spark, Unix/Linux Shell Scripting with Relational Databases technologies: (SQL) including ETL tools (Informatic) and SSIS.
