Panagiotis,
firstly thanks a lot for taking time out to write out such a detailed reply. i greatly appreciate it.
let me come out more and tell you where i am coming from. my *SOLE* purpose for taking the certification exams (i plan on taking all 3 basic exams - SCJP, SCJD and SCWCD)is for job purposes. i must confess the only field of interest to me in computer science is theoretical computer science and algorithmics. i am not quite concerned with much of anything else. however i also enjoy programming :-) i like it as a medium for problem solving... :-)
on that note i am really prepared to take either 1.2 or 1.4. all i want to do is make sure i get a good score and do something that can be *forward-used*... learning is clearly the primary motive.
thanks again and any further input from all will be greatly appreciated. although i am quite thinking along the lines of 1.4

hi eric,
that link does not tell me what application is required to be developed?
- Thanks

david,
thanks for the links, but they dont quite seem to answer my question. what i really want to know is that by taking 1.4 exam will i be losing out learning anything susbtantial. as headStrong said awt is deprecated and Swing is the new thing. an di good experience with the io package.
so focussing more on the fundamentals, as the new exam boasts, is that the best choice?
- Thanks

headStrong,
good point actually... i was initially planning to take the 1.2 certifiction in the hope that i woudl *learn* more... but i see your point regarding AWt... since Swing is superseding it, i agree that there is no point in studying AWT.
i am quite confused as to which one to go for from an overall knowledge development point of view... can i have some more input from verterans here?
- Thank you

whats the application and where can i get the details ?
- Thanks

thanks everyone i have asked customer service to furnish me the details.
hello all,
i wanted to know if scjd demands a *particular* application to be developed or one can develop any application of their own choice that meets the exam objectives?
if the latter is true, can someone please give some example apps that people have developed?
- Thank you
Shakti Shrivastava.

hi all,
i am planning on taking the SCJP exam about august end. i came across 2 such exams at the sun website. one for Platform 1.2 and the other for Platform 1.4 starting August 2002.
whats does this mean? will i have to take 1.4 based or 1.2 based? 1.4 based seems to cover much more ground. check objectives here
http://suned.sun.com/US/certification/java/java_exam_objectives.html#programmer1.4
please advise.
- Thanks
