If you are using JAAS and Weblogic:
1. Design tree in LDAP
2. Load the user info
3. Use LDAP As authentication provider.

We had a similar requirement to build logic around authentication such number of login attempts etc- We developed elaborate J2EE based API to store and track these information using LDAP.
You can use LDAP to use general user information (such as addresses, company, salary etc) as long as it is not an HR type application but the criteria should be that information is more static and non-transactional.

Thanks for the clarifications.
We actually got around the problem by using Messaging for the writes so that the performance of the application is not impacted.

Why is LDAP not write optimized and is for fast read only. There are times when we want to give capabilities to modify user attributes to users but updates are very slow.
Knowing that LDAP mostly stores user attrributes which don't change often and that drives the focus on optimizing reads - I am curious because if there are ways to achieve it, LDAP can find many more uses.

After Netscape split and mergers with AOL and IPlanet some products are showing up in both places such as the Directory Servers.
What are the differences and which one is recommended to embrace when it comes to quality, support or are they same?

That was a great suggestion. Can you tell me some of the provisioning tools that I can use.

We have been using Bouncy Castle in US and it is our security standard for all data encryptions/decryptions. Very cool...

We are currently maintaining our user profile in Active Directory (as part of Exchange)
We are planning to implement Iplanet Directory Server for Unix authentication/application usage.
I have heard of Metadirectory to integrate these. Anyone with some experience on this?

You can use a free product such as open ldap or buy one commercial product such as Iplanet directory server.
Just for 2500 though, I am not sure if LDAP is really required. You have to build API's to read/write and maintain security/administration.

I am trying to use custom tags from Apache. The input tag "select" expects both key/value in the hashmap as string. I have a reusable library which returns this as object/object pair (it can be string or int). How do I customize the custom tag without modifying the reusable component.
Any help will be appriciated.

I have setup ACL for JSP/servlets in my database realm using weblogic.servlet.*.jsp=<role> and weblogic.servlet./<jspdir>/<jspname>.jsp=<role>
It still bypasses the authentication and takes me to the screen even if I do not log in.
I am using MVC and declarative security will not work for me (defining security-constraint).
Any help will be useful.
Thanks

JSP
If you are in same context, you should be able to pass it using RequestDispatcher.

I am using front controller and trying to use RDBMS Realm. Seems like there is no way to use declarative security for authorization. Has any one good recommendation how to implement the security?

Thanks. That was very helpful.

Can you recommend a way to migrate from a Model 1 application to MVC Model 2. Are there any guidelines or best practices for this process ...there are many applications around written with previous approach, someone must have / should have come up with a best practice!
Thanks
