Thank you to everone and I really appreciate the time you all took to answer this. I have been using PERL regex since 1993 so I thought this would be an easy step to develop this in Java. Came as a surprise when I couldn't. I am retired and working at the Home Depot and using my off time to improve myself. Again thanks to all. Now how do I mark this as solved and closed?

Please accept my apologies. I didn't know that cross-posting was such a bad thing. How do I now get an answer to my question?

Thanks for sharing the 7-year old cross posting post.

I am trying unsuccessfully to use Java to match a line so I can use particular parts of the line. The String line is:
String line = "-rw-rw-r-- 1 sherman sherman 0 Feb 14 12:17 nonpedalSwing";
I am using Pattern and Matcher. This is an example of how I want to seperate the line so I can use sub 2, sub 3, and sub 5.
String Pattern = "^(-rw-rw-r-- 1 sherman sherman 0)(Feb)(14)( 12:17 )(nonpedalSwing)";
This does not work for me:
String Pattern = "^(-\\w+-\\w+-\\w--\\s\\d\\s\\w+\\s\\w+\\s+\\d\\s)(\\w+)(\\s)(\\d+)(\ \s\\d+:\\d+\\s)(\\w+)";
At the end of this message is the code I am playing with.
How would you do it?

Thanks; Sherman

I have been able to implement several learning scripts so far but this one is giving me trouble. When I installed jdk 8 the installation script said that it should not be installed as root so I installed it to /home/sherman/build_environmnet/jdk1.8.0_161. I put netbeans in /home/sherman/build_tools/netbeans-82.

Since I couldn't find the main class just by running java Beeper I found that I needed the rt.jar file. So I ran the script again with java -cp "/home/sherman/build_environment/jdk1.8.0_161/jre/lib/rt.jar" Beeper. It ust returned the same error message of "Error: Could not find or load main class events.Beeper".  The script is shown below.

Java version: 8 and 9 installed. Presently using 8

I am enjoying this journey so far. Having just started I see that I can use javajf which I have. I ave not determined how to use it yet as I have just downloaded it.

I think I understand that javafx comes with Oracle java 9. I can download that but to install it I have to gunzip, tar, and move it into place.

OK so far. I have been using UNIX since 1985 and I am using UBUNTU now without windwoes.

My thought when I started was coding within vim since I know it pretty well and that is what I have been using for Perl. I have netbeans installed but it does not recognize javafx, which I assume is just a link or classpath problem. So do you like to just code or use an IDE?

I am just looking for your thoughts.

Thank you;

Sherman

This is where I am going with all of this plus learning java along the way.

The sqlPokerInsert project obtains the user's input for the postgresql venue_visits database visits table values. The program then verifies that the user's inputs are valid. Upon verification, the user's inputs are inserted into the venue_visits database visits table.

The user is queried for the input with a default answer submitted by the sqlPokerInsert program. The program obtains the default answer from the config.properties file. The program obtains the sql database acceptable values from the postgresql venue_visits database tables as listed below.
cities, games, hi_lo, kills, stakes, states, v_limits, and venues.

Upon the user's values being valid, the valid entries are inserted into the venue_visits database visits table.

Just for clarity below are the venue_visits fourteen entries.

I am forcing the date and time entries into an integer by checking that the date and time are in the following formats.

Time: 1000 or 1800 or 2400 or 0200
Date: 20180213 or 20180112 or 19890811

The poker visits information I have goes back to 1989. I actually played my first $1/$5 seven-stud game at Binion's in 1968. Two striper in the USAF and part-time dining hall work at Vandenberg and saved up a whoping $60 for the game. Lost it all that night in Las Vegas and had to return to Vandyland on what I had left. It was surprising what you could do on couple of bucks and a Trailways bus.

Thanks to all. I see that I have more to learn and I do appreciate this. I apologize for the short variable name. I started working with UNIX in 1985 and then it was about space and memory. I will self-document using longer names.

Thank you for referring me to Scanner. I found the below code and I added the if statement and the length() statement. I wanted to know if a user just presses enter so I can let that user know that something must be entered. I think the string length let me know that.

Maybe since this is my first post I should introduce myself. I am 71, retired, and creating my own postgresql poker statistics database. I am familiar with PERL and I have never tried coding in C, C++, java, or other oop languages. I am not that familiar with oop so maybe my terminology within the group will be wrong, and I apologize for that. I am doing this in java as a learning tool but with a positive script that I can actually use.

Thank you;

How can I tell if a user has just pressed the Enter key? What kind of return will I get?

Thank you;
