reversible computing does sound super cool ;-) We do have to remember that what is also cool, available now, and revolutionary is renewable power generation. If we can be smart and align computation with cheap renewable power, that is a quicker win
At the moment, it's EU reporting and carbon taxes on imports, but those are not a great incentive (folk just pay the, low, fine). A better incentive will be when dynamic pricing rolls out more widely. Dynamic pricing is when the retail cost of electricity matches how much it costs to produce, which means when the sun is shining or the wind blowing it is cheaper. It incentivises folk to run more stuff at greener times. Sometimes that's called demand management and it is key to grid balancing for renewables
Hi Joel!

I'm glad you're delighted!

For most enterprises, the first place to start is by reducing waste in your systems - right sizing, turning off systems that are no longer used. That can reduce bills and carbon emissions by 30-50%!

You could suggest that rather than a hackathon you run a green thriftathon, where folk look for stuff to rightsize!

Your hosting bill is not a perfect measure for your carbon emissions, but it isn't bad!

Cheers,
Anne
Hi Paul,

The book is really about the principles that will apply to everything that runs on renewables, which have a different availability pattern to fossil fuel electricity. It's about the different architecture and ops patterns that will need to apply to everything. Fortunately, they are very much in line with modern best practices: multi tenancy, autoscaling, reduced time sensitivity, graceful downgrade options. That kind of thing. So yes, it has more effect if you are a big player but the knock on effects of adopting best practice are good for anyone.

Cheers,
Anne
Hi Michael,

We don't give many figures in the book as we have tried to stick to principles because they have greater longevity. We do give some high level numbers. The impact of DCs is estimated at a few % of carbon emissions, which is not as big as something like agriculture or transport but we all need to get that down to zero.

Cheers,
Anne
No, we don't cover legal questions. It's not our area. We focus on dev and ops and we have an overview of the main terms and concepts
Very happy to hear your questions no matter how tricky!!!
