Well on Windows you can try going to start->Settings->Control Panel->Java Plugin, and under "Basic" check the button "Show Java Console". This of course is assuming that you haven't done this already.

Never mind, I figured it out by digging through the docs a bit deeper than I had before.

I have 2 questions:

1) I have an applet (pertinent code to follow) that accesses a text file in the same directory as the applet classes are in, it works fine in appletviewer and sometimes when accessed locally, but when I put it on a web server I get a permissions problem.

This is how I am trying to access the file:

2) How can I get this applet to bring up another page when the user presses "Log Out" button?

I thought that in 1.5 they changed it so that the two methods work the same. But of course if you are working with anything from 1.2 to 1.4 you need to use the getContentPane().add().

Have you thought of trying the following?
instead of extending JFrame for your insert form have it extend JDialog and then make the dialog modal when you instantiate it.

Assuming that there is no compression in the imager (worst case) and that you are including the alpha channel in the calculations, each pixel would take 4 bytes (8 bits each for red, green, blue and alpha). this would bring the grand total for your size of icon to 40,000. I would then add 10% to this just to be on the safe side.

I have some code that runs great on windows but when I try it on Linux (RH7.0) I get an EmptyStackException. Can anyone help?

Following is some snippets from the offending code.

What am I doing wrong?

yes, I have checked the file system and the file is still there.

Is there some trick I'm missing to have jave delete windows shortcuts. I've written an installer for my program and I am working an an uninstaller for same, but when it comes to deleting windows shortcuts using File.delete() it never deletes the shortcut. The return value from delete() indicates that it has not been deleted. Does anyone know why this doesn't work and possibly how to make it work?

thanks, that made it work.

I'm trying to expand some files from a zip file. when I do it by reading one byte and writing one byte at a time it works fine but is very slow, but when I try to read the whole file and then write it with the following code the output file is severly truncated, why? what am I missing?

what you could do is find a open source c compiler executable, linker and such put them on your system path then when you want to compile and execute the c program you use a runtime exec to fire the compiler off. then the linker and then finally the compiled and linked executable. I hope this helps.

There's also somebody out there that has done a lot of the work for doing this already. Check out http://browserlauncher.sourceforge.net/

Sarah,
I got it to wrok by changing the name of the variable you use to do the actual calulation to bmiValue. My theory on why it didn't work the way you had it was that you had a textfield and an integer with the same name and this confused the compiler.
