Hi All,

I already posted this in the swing forum but got no answer so i thought as this is one of the most visited forums i'd post it here as well. i realy need help on this one fast. thanks.

Ok what i would like to do is to create a main window which has place holders for variouse componants that i will be adding later. now i dont like the default close maximize and minimize buttons on an application so i got rid of them. but i still want to use the functions so i created another panel which at the moment works like a title bar in windows. it has the title and the close button which works fine but i also want to add a minimize button. I know that you can use the setState(Frame.ICONIFIED) method in the main window but what can i use in a seperate panel class and how.

Hope i was clear enough. if not tell me and i will try to be clearer.

thanks for everything in advance.

ok well my answer is that java is a powerfull language as is a lot of other languages. it is not the easiest language to learn and there are times that you will feel like ripping your hair out. talking from experiance here.

java has alot of advantages but it also has its disadvantages. java for the web is probebly the most popular at the momet with java for mobile solutions a close second.

so i would say study one or both these two areas more than appliction development.

and to your question of whetehr its worth learning a new language then yes it is. you see not only will you be more marketable but by learning a new language from scratch you are improving your thinking abilities and giving ppl like us a chance to reply to querries that you post in forums asking for help. lol LOL

In the end it s upto you identifying why you want to learn a new language.

Hi All,
This is a question that has botthered me for some time.

ok say i write an application in java for example a cafe software. now this software will be running the entire time and i've noticed that the longer an application is running the more memory it takes and the machine slowly starts to slow down. i noticed this especially when using limewire. is there any way i can automatically clear memory or reduce the amount of memory that java uses. or is there some way of coding so that the application automatically restarts itself without loosing any data after flushing memory.

Thanks

lol thanks for the prompt reply layne. i was going through the other posts and i see that you have answered to nearly all of them. ok scrap that, all of them then. lol. anyway thanks for the reply. but isnt netbeans a little memmory intense. and about eclipse i cant get it to work maybee i'm hairbrained.

and do you know where i can download the J2ee packages only. then i can set a path pointing to them but i cant find a lone distribution of the required files.

Hi, I registered some time back but i've been away a long time and anyway i decided to rethink my learning pattern. so for that end i would like to start from scratch. i have a couple of questions that i would like to ask and would appreciate all the help i can get.

1) how can you manually install J2EE without downloading the application server bundle. the sun site sucks when it comes to explaining how to get other containers working (any links would be helpfull)I already have the J2SE Installed i want support for JSP and Java Beans and servlets. I would like to use Apache and tomcat.

2) whats the best IDE and Editor (IDE - Graphical click and drag interface, Editor - Hand coding with maybee code completion) it also must be light in memmory consumption.

3) Where do i start learning java other than the sun tutorials(I would like the best and easiest(I know its a paradox) that help you get down to the graphical part as soon as posible)

4) What other forums do you rank as your top 5

Thanks a Lot
