Hi
I can tell you after months of reading it has finally taken hold in my brain. One book I found that is really clear in the basics of Java is Java 2 Online. The book comes with access to a website and yeah the Java mentor isn't there but it's great to have ongoing discussions with other students.
The book is divided into 15 chapters with 5 lessons each. At the end of each lesson is a short quiz and 2 excercises to complete with no solution but the one you program based on the lesson just completed. Online is another quiz for each lesson along with 5 excercises for each chapter that have the solutions on the website. Take a look at it in your local bookshop or on Amazon.com believe me it's worth every penny.

Using the Texture Paint constructor which takes three arguments: a BufferedImage object, a Rectangle object, and an interpolation mode. It's the third argument I can't seem to get working when using : TexturePaint.NEAREST_NEIGHBOR I get an error message 'no variable NEAREST_NEIGHBOR defined in class java.awt.TexturePaint.'
Yes I have imported all the packages!
My constructor: TexturePaint tp = new TexturePaint( bImg,
new Rectangle(0, 0, imgWidth,
imgHeight),TexturePaint.NEAREST_NEIGHBOR);
Thanks for the help!

Well as they say "Damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead!"
Hey just had my 49th birthday and made the decision that what I want to do is be a Java Programmer. Never worked in the computer industry but I've been studying now for 7 months and plan to take the Sun test in another month or so. I can still ride my bicycle over 100 miles a day, run the stairs in my 13 story building 12 times 2 nights a week, and am taking a 35 mile hike in the White Mountains this weekend. I can put another 30+ years at least in this life easy. My philosophy if someone won't hire me because of age I'll start a company to make it work. At any rate by the end of this year Java programming will be my thing fulltime that's the goal. I don't have time for employers or women who worry about age!

I have never programmed in any language or been employed in any IT field and am 48 but have been learning Java for 5 months now. After reading all the posts here I have a feeling everyone would consider me nuts for thinking it's possible to go from a zero programming background to certified Java Programmer and employment in the field at my age. I'm also designing two websites one with Frontpage and one with Dreamweaver which will feature applets and applications I've written in the hope this will compensate for lack of experience. My philosophy all along has been to learn to program in Java then become certified as there is a difference between learning the grammer of English and being able to write a story in English. I really like the website and would appreciate any guidance or suggestions people have to help me achieve this goal.
